Michelle Siu / Independent — The Last Farmer – Charles Bradley

With his capable but trembling hands, 94-year-old farmer Charles Bradley, referred to as “Mr. Charles,” continues to work on his 450-acre farm that has been in his family since 1883. He lives with his wife Mary, 93, who maintains a joyful spirit despite her advanced dementia. They live independently with the support of an attentive daytime caregiver. Their story is all-too-common, as small family farms lose their profitability and large-scale farming is becoming the norm. Yet what remains is Mr. Charles, who according to Mary, has never been “a rocking chair kinda guy.”

World record-holding swimmer Jaring Timmerman died November 5, 2014 at age 105. In January 2014, this story followed Timmerman as he trained for a world swimming record in Winnipeg at age 104, only a month from his 105th birthday in February. He held four world records in 100–104 age categories at that time. His swim in the 50m freestyle would create a new FINA swimming world record in the 105–109 age category. More on this story.

2014 NPOY Judging

The live streaming of the judging of the 2014 National Pictures of the Year from Vancouver, British Columbia, has been completed. (The above video is a recording). The list of the finalists and their entries is available here.

NEWS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION OF CANADA RECOGNIZES TOP PHOTOJOURNALISTS OF 2013

The News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) is pleased to announce the winners of its seventh annual National Pictures of the Year (NPOY) awards competition, held during the National Pictures of the Year Gala event held May 24, 2014, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Over the past eight years, NPAC and its generous sponsors have awarded over $100,000 in prize money through the NPOY, making it Canada’s most prestigious and richest photojournalism awards program.

The National Pictures Of The Year awards competition was created by NPAC to recognize excellence in Canadian photojournalism. NPAC is a volunteer-run, non-profit association of professional and student photojournalists in Canada. NPAC celebrates and champions quality and ethical photography in journalism.
