A story told by the inaugural recipient of the News Photographers Association of Canada Community Storytelling Grant has been shared in one of the country’s leading publications.

When Laura Proctor was awarded the grant in 2025, she was able to create a photo essay on the harmful legacy of the Rideau Regional Centre, one of Ontario’s largest and oldest asylums, and others like it. Her work focused on the stories of former residents and family members who were institutionalized there, and the lasting effects it had on their lives.

Proctor’s story was published in the August 27, 2026 edition of The Globe and Mail, and can be seen at The Globe and Mail website.
