    FEATURE

Comments: First- A very esthetic and abstract photograph pleasing to the eye with its contrasting colors and lines. For us Norwegians, it is also fascinating to see that they flood the cropland to harvest the cranberries. Second- A playful use of a drone and its angle to capture the shadows of a marching band. A picture worth studying. Third- We love the colors and the reflections in this photo, and the framing of the man on a paddleboard in the center.
    1. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

In this photograph taken with a drone, workers pull booms while harvesting cranberries at Golden Eagle Farms, in Pitt Meadows, B.C., on Thursday, October 12, 2023. Machines are used to beat the cranberries off vines and then the bog is flooded with water. Air pockets in the fruit cause the berries to float to the surface and then workers use booms to corral them before they are pumped into transport trailers and delivered to Ocean Spray for processing.

    SPORTS

Comments: First- A photographer with highly technical skills, capturing a spinning figure skater up close. We were pleasantly surprised by the tight framing of this beautiful action portrait. An accomplishment of the photographer. Second- A startling action shot daring the viewer to wonder. Was this a victory leap for the cowboy or an early shake-off by the bull, sending this cowboy home with bruises to both body and soul. Third- A new take on a classic scene – the moment a boxer scores a knockdown. The contrast between the celebrating victor and the misery of his defeated opponent may elicit feelings of euphoria, compassion, sadness, and the rush of adrenaline from contact sports depending on the viewer. This photo captures our attention because of the many details in the scene. It’s a perfectly caught moment with the winner in the air, the loser on the ground, the judge counting, the cameraman and people in the background.

    PORTRAIT

Comments: First- A beautiful everyday moment. Because of the relationship between the photographer and the subject, we are allowed into a very intimate space. We can feel the warmth from the picture. Second- A fun and bizarre photograph that quickly captures the viewer´s attention. On a rather gray day, in a gray neighborhood, the photographer portrays a person who tries to make the world a more colorful and fun place to be. Third- A dream-like portrait of a hockey player concentrating before a NHL game. We love the colors, the light and the player´s facial expression in this photograph.

    SPOT NEWS

Comments: First- A photo with a lot of drama and energy. The colors, camera angle and action
from the scene draws us as a viewer straight into the action. Second- A vivid color contrast between the burned forest and the still lush green golf course and garden. Third- A photo that captures the wildfire as an imminent existential threat to this home.

    MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: First- From this series we experience the rodeo as if we were there. This is a photographer with highly technical skills and every photo here combines to tell the story of how John Crimber won. The photo of him on the bull is spectacular and breathtaking. Second- A series well photographed with different perspectives, from details to aerial shots, with a clean and color contrasting expression. Third- he photographer has successfully played with the lines created by the light and colors among the uniformed attendants. The faces in the straight on photo of the audience is fascinating to examine.
