FEATURE

Judges comments: A lot of these were wonderful pictorials or landscape images but lacked a moment. First place stood out primarily, and third place felt like it would have done much better as a single in news.

1. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

NEWS

Judges comments: First could have been a much stronger entry if placed in portraits, but it definitely stood out among the rest. Second was a nice moment that could have done with a little cropping but was fun nevertheless. Third had great use of light.

1. Marie-France Coallier/Le Devoir

MIAMI, QC - October 31, 2020 - Anita Davila, activist for the Democratic Party, wears sunhat, the protective mask and glasses with the American flag in the lenses. SPORTS

Judges comments: First place immediately stood out, nice execution with the blur and a clean, colorful frame. Second was a fun image is a fun contrast with mountain biking through a greenhouse that had nice use of contrast. Third place would have been a wonderful pictorial but the color made up for the lack of direct sports action.

1. Evan Buhler/Rocky Mountain Outlook

3. Bernard Brault/La Presse

Golfers walks to their bag after hitting their balls early in the morning during a cold autumn day at the Chateau Bromont golf course.

PORTRAIT

Judges comments: Maybe the strongest category, first place used the environment to tell the story of who this person is and stood out creatively and storytelling-wise. Second is a clean image with nice light. Third and honorable mention were images with nice light and character.

1. Ben Nelms/CBC News

90-year-old wooden toymaker Bill Chalmers is pictured in his woodworking shop at his home in West Vancouver, British Columbia on Friday, October 30, 2020.

University professor June Francis is pictured outside of her home in Vancouver, British Columbia on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

SPOT NEWS

Judges comments: This felt like the weakest category overall. Lots of images with nothing going on, but the two listed had nice quality of light, the rainbow in the second image could have been executed better but was nicely seen.

1. Ben Nelms/CBC News

2. Ben Nelms/CBC News

3. Not awarded.

MULTI-PHOTO

Judges comments: Many entries felt like a series of images from events with repetitive frames in each. First place on Hockey felt like the most contained story with a mix of features and procedural images, a lot of interesting images from second, some even that we felt would have done better entered alone in the portrait and sports categories. Pet blessing is just cute.

Kris Hopping (Courtenay, British Columbia), keeps warm beside a propane fire prior to the start of the fifth annual Tripleshot CrossFondo cycling race held at the University of Victoria’s Technology Park in Victoria, British Columbia Canada on October 18, 2020. More than 250 riders were entered in the 45km race, weaving through rural parts of Saanich and the Saanich Peninsula.

Jenna Peters of Victoria, British Columbia (women’s 30-39 category) tucks a mask into her pocket after leaving the start line of the Tripleshot CrossFondo. The COVID-19 Pandemic forced organizers to change the format to a time-trial race, with riders leaving the start line spaced 30-seconds apart (a shift from the mass start used in previous years).

Christopher Kam (men’s 50-59 category) rides through a greenhouse at the halfway mark of the race. According to organizers, the change in format from mass start to time trial did not significantly change the riding experience as in previous years riders spread out shortly after the start and were essentially alone most of the time anyway.

Shelley Peachell (women’s 40-49 category) grimaces as she rides through Tantivy Horse Stables which hosted both a recovery station and mobile repair shop.
There were several precautions in place to prevent pre- and post-race gathering. For example, in previous years participants parked and gathered in one parking at the finish line but this year people were directed to park in the surrounding Technology Park and nearby Camosun College parking lots.

James Barry of Victoria (men’s 50-59) exits from a muddy section of the course through Slugett Farms. The route is somewhat different each year and kept secret until the riders head out.  On average the ride crosses about 60 pieces of property, 50 of them private. Barry finished with a time of 2:48:25.

Decked out in the official Crossfondo race jersey, Jililian Farhang (men’s 30-39 category) runs his bike up a hill while weaving through a patch of blackberries. Farhang, of Victoria, B.C., finished with a time of 3:04:08.

Derek Sivorot of Victoria (left), and Andrew Casey of North Saanich (right) ride past a local land-owner who played banjo throughout the race in support of racers passing through. Sivorot and Casey, both entered in the men’s 30-39 category, crossed the line together in a time of 3:59.

Andrew Neale enjoys a banana during a rest stop at a Saanich donkey farm. Neale (of Victoria, B.C.) finished with a time of 3:46:12 in the men’s 60-69 category. There is no map for riders to look at prior to the race and they must keep an eye out for flags marking the “mystery” route as they go.  The result is a race atmosphere where the focus is on adventure, and less about the clock.

Tim Winter, entered in the men’s 50-59 category, rides through the vineyards at Church and State Winery in Saanich, B.C..  Winter finished the gruelling event with a time of 3:10:34.

A participant rides through a muddy section of single track.  Just like in previous years the course was split between off-road trails and technical single-track, striking a nice balance between cyclocross and mountain bike skills

Corey Bergerud of Victoria rides a single track section of the course as he passes over the deck of a moss covered vintage truck. Bergerud finished with a time of 4:33:17 in the men’s 30-39 category.

Riders Tom and Luke Mione, a father and son team from Victoria B.C., take their shoes and helmets off after crossing the finish line together in a time of 4:13.54.

Elizabeth Johnson from Victoria (entered in the women’s 40-49 category) smiles after crossing the finish line in a time of 3:44:40. All proceeds raised went to the Tripleshot Youth cycling program with portions directed to the South island Mountain Bike Society and the Nature Trail Society.
