FEATURE

Judges comments: There were a lot of animal/wildlife photos submitted; not that we don't value images of wildlife, but we have a high bar for them, and none of those entries rose to that bar. We liked the color and dark, lonely mood of the first place image - a location we wouldn't have thought of going to during the pandemic. Second had a strong and funny moment but wish the man had a better reaction or looked more engaged. Third had nice light but we were disappointed that we couldn't see any of the subjects' faces - wish the photog had been standing in front of someone.

Due to COVID-19, the indoor amusement park requires all guests to wear a face mask and has placed strict limits on the number of people permitted inside and time limits on how long they can stay per visit.

As Canada begins to reopen its economy following Covid-19 shutdowns, gyms and fitness centres still remain closed as they determine how to comply with social distancing measures.

NEWS

Judges comments: The first place image was good seeing by the photog, an unexpected frame of a politician. The second was a nice, light moment. Third had good emotion but wish the woman facing the camera was more prominent in the frame rather than the other woman's back.

SPOT NEWS

Judges comments: Another weaker category, so we only awarded two places. We liked the first-place image because of the juxtaposition of the resident using a garden hose with the firefighters using more powerful hoses in the background. Second is a strong moment but the car in the background is unfortunate.

1. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

A resident uses a garden hose to douse a burning stump that caught fire as a result of embers flying in the air as firefighters battle a three-alarm fire at a four storey residential building under construction in Vancouver, on Thursday, June 18, 2020.

2. Ben Nelms/CBC

VPD officers take a man into custody after he was allegedly agitating a crowd after rally against racism in Vancouver, British Columbia on Friday, June 5, 2020.

3. Not awarded

PORTRAIT

Judges comments: We only awarded two places; we felt that the category was a little weak. There were definitely some portraits that were OK or well-lit, but weren't especially creative or different. First was good color and the out-of-focus bubbles were a plus. Second was a candid portrait but we felt that it worked in this category because it really captured the essence of their relationship.

1. Kevin Light/Freelance

Canadian Ironman athlete Brent McMahon poses for a portrait after removing his wetsuit for the cool down portion of his training session at Thetis Lake in Victoria, British Columbia on June 26, 2020.

2. Ben Nelms/CBC

Mother Klara Cramer holds her son Tomas during a seizure at their home in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia on Thursday, June 18, 2020. Tomas was born with a rare genetic mutation called GRIN1, Tomas can't walk or crawl or speak and suffers through dozens of seizures every day.

MULTI-PHOTO

Judges comments: Not to be too harsh but we really felt like this was the weakest category. Many entries simply needed a tighter edit. A strong edit cuts down on repetition; there's no point in having three photos that convey the same thing. Also, in a picture story/essay, we really need to see variety in focal lengths and/or distance to subject. If people are the same size in every frame, that's a red flag. Lastly, there were one or two other entries that had decent variety but we didn't see any sort of visual narrative or thematic development – they were really just a collection of pictures. We recognize that the industry no longer allows as much time for us to do in-depth, character-driven narrative storytelling. But even a single-day event can be photographed with the same approach that you would take with a long-term photo story. The entry that we awarded could have benefited from a tighter edit – for example, too many fists-up images, which are the "obvious" moment in these protests – but it had good variety of distance/focal length as well as emotional variety, plus nice use of light.
