FEATURE

Judges comments: First place is hilarious, and making judges laugh is always a good way to win a clip. Second place is a gorgeous quiet image and very well composed. Third place shows a great find in juxtaposition but could be served by a better crop. HM’s to the campfire, which was gorgeous lighting but needed some human element and the kilted bar patron looking for a place to drink, which was also humorous but needed a better crop.

NEWS

Judges comments: First place, WOW. What a great job seeing that image. The second place image is another great job seeing a scene, the walking sign makes this frame. It’s subtle and it hits. Third place is a great capture of social distancing and well composed. HM for a strong and clean image from the stock floor.

SPORTS

Judges comments: Judges appreciated the capture of the moment in the first place image. Second place was a nice different take on a rowing shot, clean background, but a different crop might have helped. The light in the third place skiing image was gorgeous but caption was lacking much context or information. Honorable mention for catching the kick to the face.

SPOT NEWS

Judges comments: Nice moment and light on the flooding spot news image. Second place was a strong moment of the urgency in the COVID-19 crisis. Third place does well to capture the economic impacts of the crisis, but placed lower in favor of the images that required quick action to capture the moment.

PORTRAIT

Judges Comments: First place really well done simple portrait, strong understated lighting and well composed. Rooftop portrait in second was creative but points docked for leaving name in the caption and metadata. Third place was the best of several workplace impact portraits. Honorable mentions to two strong images that read much more like found moments than portraits.

MULTI-PHOTO

Judges comments: First place is the best edited of all the multi-image entries and easily the best edited of the pandemic related entries we saw, which made up our three winners. Second place featured nice frames, a few we had discussed but not awarded in other areas. Third place had several strong images, but was far too large an entry and needed to be edited down. Honorable mention to rugby, which had some strong images overall, but we were confused why some were kept in the multi-image entry and why others weren’t entered as singles. Overall, this could have been reduced to 6-7 images and would have been first.
