FEATURE

Judges comments: First place shows originality and a funny off-beat moment with thorough caption info. Second place features a great expression and fun moment (also with good caption info). Judges think the second place photo would benefit from a tighter crop. Third place: Great composition and nice light. Honorable mention mentions; judges saw many variations of “fall foliage” photos - but believe this one was the most successful. Nice color contrast and good composition.

NEWS

SPORTS

Comments: First place: Not an easy to capture. Shows great awareness by the photographer. Great expression on players face and kid reacting. Second place: Good composition. We like the minimal but effective color palette. Third place: Strong composition with great lighting. Nice for including the “compete” on top.

PORTRAIT

Comments:  First place: We like the thought process for this photo - it’s not an obvious portrait. Illustrates the story well. Second place: Well composed, shows great personality and good relationship between subject and photographer. Judges would like if the bench on bottom was cropped out. Third place: Interesting lighting technique but relies too much on the technique.

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Overall a very disappointing category. Entries either had too many photos that watered down the series, or too few with an undeveloped story. We chose to just reward one entry. Story showed intimacy with subject and followed them to different situations key to telling the story. Could use more interaction and emotion.
