FEATURE

Judges comments: A humorous moment, simple color scheme, and a clean, effective composition make this our top pick. The moment shows an engaged relationship and the sparseness of the scene allows the viewer to focus on that connection.

1. Jeff Mcintosh/The Canadian Press

A spectator and her dog sit in the stands during the National at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alta., Friday, June 7, 2019.

Judges comments: The photographer moved to the right position to capture this moment in a frame that allows the viewer’s eye to move pleasingly from face to face, and touches on larger themes of aging and the passage of time. The photo might have been stronger if the photographer had found a way to clean up the distracting elements on the left side of the frame, and reveal more of the second boy’s face. Again, this photo is shows a relationship and exudes a mood, rather than just documenting the action.

2.  Ian Martens/Lethbridge Herald

Two-year-old Samuel Kool and his four-year-old brother John meet Second World War veterans Stan Dean and Jack Fettig, along with Bryan Fettig, following the D-Day commemoration ceremony at the cenotaph.

Judges comments: The photographer simultaneously captured symmetrical subjects, and angled lines that lead the viewer to explore the frame. This image shows skillful use of light to capture the moody, atmospheric quality of life in the city, and the photographer had the patience to wait for the subjects to pass through the frame. A more emotionally charged moment would have pushed this higher in the Feature category.

3. Darryl Dyck/Freelance

Sunlight reflects off windows on an office tower as two men walk in the financial district of London, on Monday June 17, 2019.

NEWS

Comments: The photographer captured the moment and successfully filled the frame with the emotion of and varying reactions to the Raptors’ historic win. There is something new to discover in the picture with each glance.

1. Mark Blinch/Freelance

Toronto Raptors championship street celebration June 13, 2019.

Comments:  This dramatic framing, skillful use of light and composition make an unexpectedly interesting picture in an otherwise routine situation.

2. David Bloom/Postmedia

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer delivers a speech called "A Closer and Freer Federation" at The Royal Glenora Club, in Edmonton Tuesday June 4, 2019.

Comments: This is a strong, storytelling photo that conveys the tension underlying the protest. Though it could be cleaned up compositionally, it’s obvious the photographer was prepared to photograph the breaking news.

3. Jesse Winter/The Star Vancouver

A Fraser Health employee (left)) attempts to stop anti-poverty activists from forcing their way into a secured area of the health authority's main office in Surrey, B.C.

Comments: This photographer saw a humorous and touching, human moment occurring, but to this photo is a better fit for the FEATURE category.

H.M. Liam Richards/Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Eid Al Fitr prayers to end Ramadan at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, SK on Tuesday, June 4, 2019.

SPORTS

Comments: This is a unique glimpse of an emotional moment in a historically significant game. It shows the photographer’s forethought in setting up a remote camera, and is stronger than other similar frames because the athlete’s expressions are visible.

1. Mark Blinch/Freelance

Serge Ibaka #9 of the Toronto Raptors against the Golden State Warriors during Game Two of the NBA Finals on June 2, 2019 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Comments: A great photo. The photographer filled the frame in what could have been a chaotic scene, captured the emotion, and nailed the moment.

2. Bernard Brault/La Presse

Formula One Grand Prix of Canada held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve of the Ile Notre Dame (44) Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport) celebrates his victory with champagne  with his engineer: Margarita Torres Diez,

Comments: An excellent capture of peak action combined with clean composition make this a fresh, interesting photo.

3. Kevin Light/Freelance

Member of the Kajaks Track and Field club Emma Kimoto clears the bar with a jump of 1.76 metres enough to finish third place behind Americans Amina Smith (1.88M) and Tynita Townsend (1.84M) at the Harry Jerome Track Classic at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, British Columbia on Thursday June 20th, 2019.

PORTRAIT

Comments: Beautiful neon lighting and and the subject’s compelling and intense expression make this an effective portrait.

1. Josie Desmarais/Journal Metro

Punk artist Zïlon, poses next to one of his neon sculpture. The godfather of Montreal street art is exposed at the Écomusée du fier monde. Montreal, June 25, 2019.

Comments: Skillful use of light and the relaxed, contemplative posture of the subject, makes for a fresh, elegant and compelling bridal portrait.

2. Darryl Dyck/Freelance

A bride poses for photographs in a small patch of sunlight on a street in Paris, on Monday June 24, 2019.

Comments: This environmental portrait does a good job at showing a story through a face via leading lines and a compelling moment. The balance of dark and light could be switched to make an even stronger image.

3. Leah Hennel/Freelance

Sonny Poitras, from Saskatchewan’s Moosomin First Nation, takes a from changing horseshoes at the chuckwagon races in Mackwacis, Alta. Poitras is a  farrier and spends summers changing horseshoes at professional chuckwagon races.

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Our top pick because the photographer was able to put in the time and effort to tell a well-rounded story about both the impacts and benefits of logging. The edit is thoughtful, connecting consecutive images with color and visual references.

1. Jesse Winter/The Star Vancouver

Big Lonely Doug - the second tallest recorded Douglas Fir tree in Canada - stands in the middle of a cutblock outside of Port Renfrew, B.C. The B.C. Green Party is calling for an end to old-growth logging of trees like Doug, believed to be at least 800 years old.

Workers in a dry sort lot in Chemainus, B.C. cut and sort logs for export. An end to old-growth logging could spell disaster for the Vancouver Island forestry industry and the jobs that rely on it.

Jens Wieting, a senior forests and climate change campaigner with the Sierra Club, stands in the shadow of the "Pandora Tree" in an unprotected area of the Carmanah Walbran region of Vancouver Island. Activsts like Wieting have for decades opposed the logging of old growth forests like this one, saying there is only around 5 per cent of Vancouver Island's original old growth left standing.

A hand-painted stone rests on a fallen nurse log in an unprotected old growth forest stand in the Carmanah Walbran region of Vancouver Island. Environmentalists point to the incredibly high concentration of biodiversity that grows in old-growth forests as a reason to save them.

Jens Wieting, a senior forests and climate change campaigner with the Sierra Club, surveys a cut block that includes old growth trees on Vancouver Island.

William Buckley poses for a photograph with his dogs next to a shed erected by anti-logging activists in the Carmanah Walbran region of Vancouver Island. Buckley himself has protested against the logging of old growth stands in the past.

The small community of Port Renfrew, B.C., has worked hard to brand itself as a tourist destination focused in part on old growth forests after the logging industry left.

Friends enjoy a swim in Walbran Creek as it flows through an unprotected stand of old growth forest in the Carmanah Walbran region of Vancouver Island. The area is one of the few remaining untouched old growth stands on Vancouver Island. Though it is treated as a provincial park by many, it is not officially protected from logging.

A fishing boat heads out from the harbour in Port Renfrew, B.C. The tiny town has worked hard to brand itself as a tourist destination for fishers and people who want to visit old growth forests.

A logging truck carrying old growth logs rolls through Port Alberni, B.C. With three active lumber mills and another on the way, the town relies on the logging industry to survive. As the industry across B.C. is flagging, many here feel a ban on old growth logging would cripple an already fragile industry.

A woman and child walk past a mural depicting an old growth forest in Port Alberni, B.C. The long-time logging town's downtown core is suffering. With the Green Party calling for a halt to all old growth logging on the island, many are worried about the impact on communities like Port Alberni.

A street scene in downtown Port Alberni, B.C. The longtime logging town's downtown is struggling, with many empty shops and vacant storefronts.

Jen Weightman, a fork lift driver at the Coulson Mill in Port Alberni. Weightman has worked in the lumber industry for 17 years. Her family relies on the logging industry, she says.

Workers at the Coulson Mill outside Port Alberni. The mill, owned by San Group, is expanding to focus on milling smaller trees and value-added manufacturing rather than simply exporting raw logs to the U.S. While the mill still accepts some old growth forests, it no longer relies on the giant trees.

Cedar logs float in a holding area at the Coulson Mill in Port Alberni, B.C.

Comments: This succinct journey told a cohesive story about a an interesting event. We meet the characters, see where they are going, and get a quirky detail. The tones are consistent and the photos keep nice composition. It may have been nice to have another medium or wide shot to set the scene, but this submission did not fall into the common trap of editing too loose.

2. David Bloom/Postmedia

Comments: The photographer successfully captured the diverse events and emotions of the draft with a variety of compositions, focal lengths and subject matter. A tighter edit, with more attention to identifying strong opening and closing photos, would have strengthened this series.
