Comments: It was a cute moment with strong use of color.

2. David Bloom/Postmedia

Comments: Interesting, graphic angle but wish it offered more visual context to what was happening.

SPORTS

Comments: We liked the framing, the moment with the snow flying, and the use of light. It creates a sense of tension and drama.

Philippe Marquis performs during a perfect spring day  on the hill of Whitewater ski station in British Columbia.

Comments: The light was beautiful here and the tight framing with the water flying contributed to a unique swimming photo.

Stage actor Yves Jacques mimics looking at the moon, between two curtains at a restaurant. After having toured the world, La face cachée de la lune (The hidden side of the moon), a key piece in Robert Lepage's repertoire, is taken up again in Montreal. March 20th 2019, Montreal. 3. Bernard Brault/La Presse

A man with a cigar stands on Plaza Vieja in the old part of La Habana in Cuba.

SPOT NEWS

Comments: This was a weak category and this photo was the best in terms of showing a spot news scene with something happening in it.

Crews had to extricate the driver of the mini-van, who was transported to hospital with what were described as serious injuries.

Comments: The light was beautiful in this picture but it was rather static.

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: This was a thoughtful story that creatively captured the subject’s situation. The photographer and subject clearly had a comfortable relationship and that allowed the photographer to make interesting, intimate pictures.

Mark Zillman uses the prop stick to hold the main lid of the concert grand piano inside Walter Hall at the Faculty of Music, Edward Johnson building Tuesday, March. 5, 2019. When he was two, the Yonge and Eglinton area resident lost his vision to a cancer called retinoblastoma — and he hasn't let being blind hold him back in life.

Zillman lifts the case off a grand piano inside the University of Toronto's faculty of music.

Mark Zillman walks across the stage after tuning one of two grand pianos inside the Walter Hall Edward Johnson building. The two pianos inside the concert hall are tuned every day by a variety of tuners.

While sitting on the subway going to his next job, Zillman pulled out his digital camera that he takes everywhere he goes. Despite having zero sight, he visualizes scenes and creates a composition in his head. He uses a digital Fujifilm camera that has retro control wheels meaning that Zillman can change all the setting by feeling button clicks. He has memorized every inch of the camera.

Zillman smiled as he heard the sound of a musician echoing through the subway corridors and took a coin out of his pocket and dropped it in the guitar case.

Zillman uses a piano tuning wrench to precisely tune each key.

The stage lights reflect off the piano in the Hugh's Room Live.

Using a tuning wrench with one hand, Mark Zillman carefully listens to the sound of a key inside the Hugh's Room Live.

After over an hour of tuning, Zillman plays a few melodies to listen for any imperfections or out of tune notes.

Comments: Nice variety of images with details, but wish the photographer had been in more situations - most of the pictures all have the same blue tone, so we wish the photographer had been able to work the changing room or other locations more. The edit could have been tightened a little as well.

Comments: There was some redundancy and the edit could have been tightened, but the pictures are well executed. We wish there could have been a little more depth as well - what happens to the sheep and/or the wool afterward?

3. Leah Hennel/Freelance

Sheep wait their turn in the chute as a member of their flock meets the clippers at Spring Point Colony. There are 750 sheep to be shorn and the folks at Spring Point Colony have two days to do it. The colony sits in the Beaver Creek valley on the south slopes of the Porcupine Hills about a half-hour northeast of Pincher Creek. An offshoot of the older Granum Hutterite Colony, Spring Point has called this verdant valley home since 1960. Like most Hutterite colonies, Spring Point is diverse in its agricultural enterprises. Grain, cattle (both beef and dairy) and pigs keep the colony members busy all year round. But as the winter days lengthen and the snow—at least in most years—melts, all attention turns to the sheep.
