couple of observations…

-seeing your work on the screen followed by a chorus of 'Out" = ouch

-while we all need to know how to light and light well, it ain't going to turn a sow's ear into a purse

-it's nice to know who the judges are

great job !

Portrait category was very strong, but the feature and general news categories were lacking — judges struggling with finding good emotion in the photos. You know it's never good when they're going through photos and saying, "keep it in, it's at least something from what we've seen so far."

I love watching the process though, I'm learning lots from the judges' comments. Looking forward to the rest after lunch!

Thankfully it's being archived, I forgot all about it.

Looking forward to the next section starting.

What a humbling experience it is to watch this. Out is now my least favourite word in the english language.

Best quote from a judge so far. "If the photographer isn't behind the camera, its an out for me." Louie Palu

All,

This was good to have the National Pictures of the Year judging streamed live online for the first time. I'd like to remind all members that even though some improvements may be needed, overall the experience was successful and educational. I believe this was a step in the right direction for our organization. At one point I noticed we had 45 viewers online watching the judging which is a pretty good crowd in any room.

We should thank Ryan Jackson and The Edmonton Journal for facilitating the live streaming and Moe Doiron for coordinating and moderating the judges. And of course the judges: Ken Faught, Louie Palu and Lana Slezic who donated their time and efforts to our group. We are truly grateful.

If you missed the broadcast, you can find an archived version at: http://npac.ca/2014/03/2013-npoy-judging-livestream/

The live judging was great to watch. Thanks to Ryan Jackson, Moe Doiron and everyone else involved with setting it up.

Thanks to the judges as well. I think we've established that Louie Palu really likes concert photos that have an animal in them and a tilted horizon.

Will there be a list of the nominees prior to the conference?

Tim, yes the judges certainly made some of their pet peeves known.

Full list of nominees should be posted in next few days. Stay tuned.

All photo nominees have been posted. Multimedia entries will be judged next week. Student Photojournalist of the Year entries will be judged in late May.

Interesting to note that, similiar to last year, there's only one vertical picture and a couple of square images, the rest are horizontal. Hmmm...

More of a funny quote.
I get that judging is subjective but to have a judge not consider a photo because it was a remote is silly.
The contest is all about great pictures, if the image is awesome then the fact that the photographer wasn't "behind the camera" shouldn't matter.
