Show me the money
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:52 AM »
The Globe and Mail has published a list of Canada's top 1000 most profitable publicly traded companies based on fiscal year 2012.

The big surprise is Thomson Reuters. It went from position 998 in 2011 to position 11 in 2012, with a +249% profit increase.

Quebecor has position 106, down from position 101 in 2011, with a -17% drop in profits, but it's still very profitable. Quebecor Media is ranked 28th (for 2012) for private companies, based on revenue, and is also profitable.

Torstar is in position 138. That's a -53% drop in profits from 2011, when it held position 96, but the company is quite profitable.

Glacier Media Group is in position 390 with a -59% profit drop from 2011, when it held position 292. But it's still a profitable company.

FP Newspapers is in position 459 with a +155% profit increase from 2011 when it was in position 764.

All of the above companies made the big bucks in 2012. Can't say that for the companies below:

Postmedia is in position 857 with a -142% profit drop compared to 2011 when it was in position 807. It lost a ton of money in 2012.

Transcontinental is in position 982 with a  -238% profit drop compared to 2011 when it held position 171. In 2012, it lost almost as much money as a photographer spends on camera equipment.  :)
