Mentorship program
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:34 PM »
In the Christmas giving mood?
Years ago did someone give you advice- a kick in the butt- that helped you make it?
Time to pay that Karma back to the next generation?
Want to warp the mind of photojournalist at the start of their career?
We are looking for senior photographers, photo-editors who are willing to join our mentorship program. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Jill Kitchener jill_is@hotmail.com in the next week please.
It's a six month commitment.
To the students, photographers at the start of their career, who have started typing hold on just a little bit longer. Soon we will let you know how to apply.
Cheers
Rod

Just bumping this up to the top. If you are interested in volunteering please let Jill know by Thursday please.
Each mentor will only have one mentee. We will try and match two based on interests.
Many photographers are wondering whats involved in being a mentor. We want someone who can look at work critically. Notice those gaps in portfolios and the way an assignment was shot. Can explain those holes and how to fill them.
Can help the young photographer with ideas before they head out.
With email, skype, google hangouts, there a lot of ways the two can connect and talk about the work, they don't need to be sitting together at a coffee shop.
Really the way we see the program is someone who can help guide, give gentle nudges at an important time in the photographer's career.

Great program. I'm in. Maybe I can offer some advice from a freelancer's perspective. I'll let them who the best editors to work for are. :)

Great news that the Mentor program is being resurrected Rod and I'm positive it'll be a huge benefit to the students/newer members and something that was long overdue. Hopefully it will be exploited to it's full potential.

Having said this, smart students will have already taken advantage of the generosity of senior members by contacting them off list and establishing a Jedi/Padwan relationship so to speak. Tip=the member directory is in the contact pulldown ;)

and fwiw, I've offered to return the favor of help I received over the years and am open to talking about things other than black and white film and toycameras

Sounds like the wheels are in motion. Thanks to everyone who has been working on this.

I'm going to plug this on the facebook group for Loyalist students.

We have an EXCELLENT group of mentors this year. Talented photographers & editors who know the industry inside & out, multimedia specialists, portrait specialists and those who know the business of photography like none other.
Having a mentor at the beginning of your career can help it immensely. You will learn new styles and techniques of photography & editing, but also have someone to bounce ideas off of and learn as much as you can about the breadth of photojournalism.

Send me a few paragraphs (jill_is@hotmail.com) letting me know your interests and what you would like to get out of the program. If possible, send a resume/portfolio/links etc so we can match you with the best mentor for your skills & interests.

Mentors include: Moe Doiron, Mark Blinch, Don Denton, Dave Chidley, Graeme Roy, Christopher Pike, Fred Lum, Ann-Marie Jackson, Brent Foster, Tara Walton, Adrian Wyld, Warren Toda, Jimmy Jeong, Andrew Tolson, Andy Clark and Phill Snel (sorry I forgot you in this list the first time Phill)

Impressive indeed! I look forward to your applications.
Cheers,
Jill

Any chance of this program being resurrected? I applied in 2011 but did not receive a response (was not accepted?).

Just to add another approach .
We have been running summer  internship at the Wpg Free Press for a number of years . All of our  photogs  contribute something . I have created a set of email , internship notes  that I send out over the 12 week period . The young  shooters seem to find them useful . I don't subscribe to conventional newspaper ideas and procedures  because I have only witnessed  decline and  neglect  over decades . Very little attention is given to the day to day aspects of the job and the outdated notion that news photographers should just be thrown into these intense situations  without any preparation . I may not be the best candidate as a mentor but  issues , common sense , and strategy  are easily passed on. A photographer doesn't need to stumble along making the same mistakes everyone makes when starting out. I encourage any mentor to begin writing down their methods so they may be passed on . It has taken several years  of evolution to understand  just what is required for a green  photographer to take responsibly for a night shift or a weekend shooting news , feature and sports . The first set of notes were very informal and have been greatly improved.
There is no one way to do this job , this is not a “how to” , but a broadening of perspective to be taken  as FYI only . If anyone is interested in these notes just email .
