NPAC Conference Speaker Announcement: Laurence Butet-Roch
« on: February 26, 2020, 05:47 PM »
We are pleased to announce another speaker for the NPAC 2020 Conference, Laurence Butet-Roch.

Butet-Roch has worked in various capacities within the media industry. After completing a B.A in International Relations at UBC and studying photography at SPAO, she became a photo editor for the French magazine Polka, a position that eventually led her to write several articles for that publication as well as others, such as The British Journal of Photography, the New York Times Lens Blog, and The New Yorker Photo Booth. In 2015, she went back to school to pursue a Master of Digital Media at Ryerson University to explore how to foster a more generative and inclusive interactive media landscape, where people usually kept to the margins can share their stories in ways that respect and reflect their storytelling traditions.

Laurence is now a PhD candidate in Environmental Studies at York, where she studies the discourses advanced by the visual narratives associated with environmental contamination and systemic environmental racism in Canada and looks back at the work she's produced as a photographer in places where communities must navigate a tense, complex and often conflicting, relation with resource extraction such as Thetford Mines and Aamjiwnaang First Nation.

She continues to contribute to the likes of Aperture, Foam, National Geographic, PhotoLife, and Point of View, amongst others, while also teaching Interactive Storytelling at Ryerson University. A former member of Boreal Collective, she is now affiliated with Women Photograph and continues to participate in community-building initiatives within our industry, always with the hope of pushing the boundaries of what visual storytelling can be and do.
