Toronto story idea
« on: June 04, 2012, 04:49 PM »
An idea for those in Toronto:

This Friday marks the 40th anniversary of one of the most iconic news photos ever taken. All I have to say is that it was shot during the Vietnam war by photographer Nick Ut. You've seen the picture a hundred times.

The person in the photo, who lives just east of Toronto (this year also marks her 20th year in Canada since she defected in 1992), will be holding a special event this Friday at the Royal York Hotel.

Sadly, I can't afford to hire that wonderful Toronto photographer and I'm busy this week photographing a few captains of industry (okay, they may only be lieutenants).

I always hope that when I show up, one of these "captains" will be wearing an actual naval uniform or a pirate outfit. So far, no such luck.  :)

I received an email from someone attending the event, asking me to come take some photos of the event, but I am very busy Friday night. I have met Kim photographed her and had my picture taken with her in the past, she is a wonderful lady with an amazing story  :)

ABC-TV story includes pictures of Nick Ut back at the same spot just a couple of months ago. Look at the uncropped version of the famous image and you'll see another photographer, off to the right, busy reloading his camera.

Somewhere (but I can't find it right now) there's video (i.e. 16mm news footage) of that June 1972 day. A news cameraman was next to Nick Ut and he filmed the same thing. Watching that film, you can see that the famous picture lasted only a moment. On video, it's almost unnoticeable. But in a still image....

Warren,

There is a brief clip that was part of this ITN 40th anniversary video:
