Hunger Games - What would Happen if ?!
« on: May 02, 2012, 04:52 PM »
TV and Radio are 24 hour operations ,they do not need a website .This is a survival  game anyway you cut it . All media cannot offer the same service and stand in the same spot.
In the last 4 years newspapers and other media have struggled with website page design , while  the world has moved on to smart phones  and social media. By the time  mainstream media stop chasing their tails and duplicating services with the perfect website who knows where the rest of the world will be .
The world without news releases is the world of newspapers before 1980, everything gathered was done by reporters at street level and grudgingly  verified by official sources. The spoon feeding of media has created a weak system of followers . Going into the future with a follower mentality  and will only get everyone handled and  hacked .There is a need to move our space , the time people read newspapers and or news web pages  from the time we already own into evening hours .This means involvement by ordinary readers in the  product for a concrete purpose . The language of communication departments will not do and we waste valuable resources when it is clear our readers want something else.

What would happen  if everybody stopped writing press releases . Governments stopped talking to reporters  and kicked them out of legislatures  and   Parliament. What if the mayor told the whole bunch of us to take a hike ? , Buh-Bye .
What if the cops stopped their daily newsers and canceled vague official versions  of every time they turned their emergency lights on .
What if Corporations fired their communication people and just didn't  answer their phone .
What if the fire department wouldn’t  let us cover thier fires anymore . Ok , no ,THEY would never do that .
If any of that happened and the official  sources dried up and fax machines were shut off , mass media e-mails lost , They never liked us anyway. What would happen ?
Newspapers would be great again. Survivalism  from a position of strength . With other media cutting back , shortening news casts , dropping or shortening sports segments , contracting to save money an opportunity presents itself .
This would be a “hunger games” of news gathering .  The three main elements of the newsroom would have to truly tighten  up , become one hard unit . With the resources  that currently exist , this business would change completely in a sustainable way. The story focus and daily approach would be lean and mobile ,and community focused in a way never conceived of before .
The rebirth of a totally new and vibrant newsroom with  strongly co-dependant  and unified  desk that merged  print , photo and online / social  media into one single unit . That would be something interesting to model , this would typically be survival  mode small paper model with the benefit of a large newsroom with all senses  firing for a common purpose . It would mean questioning everything we do on a daily basis  and bringing much needed freshness and multi layered  demographics because it would have to  a grass roots approach .
