Beauty pageants and photography
« on: May 15, 2013, 03:07 PM »
You're probably tired of reading claims that a contest-winning photo must have altered. Seemingly, everything is fake and conspiracy theories abound.

An article in Spiegel, titled Enhanced Reality: Exploring the Boundaries of Photo Editing, has a lot of the same old same old information. But it also talks about an Italian company, named 10b, that enhances pictures specifically so that they can win photo contests.

This might bring up a comparison to businesses, such as in Venezuela, that work with women so that they can win specific beauty pageants - cosmetic surgery, style makeovers, etc.

Should photo contests require that the photographer light, shoot and process the images themselves? Or perhaps, like with movies, photo contests should award Best Picture, Best Lighting, Best Directing, Best Producer, Best Story, Best Photography, .....?

Since there are so many categories for awards already ,  the lofty goal of  participation is reward enough . WE are all winners , or winers .I get  those two words mixed up sometimes. Enhancements are like the things elite athletes do to gain a 1/100th  second advantage at the Olympics ,it cannot turn a sows ear into a silk purse. So where exactly was that place again?

Photoshop has a ten  item toolbar , 50 image settings , 29 layers  21 filters  with over 107 variables .What does that tell you? I have no idea how 90% of it works .Burn  dodge and  crop  at one level above  standard  Walmart printer perfection.
Do pictures get extra attention for awards ? Are awards a gateway to a very small number of job placements and internships? Do awards matter? Just how far will a person go ? Hum. Half the risk takers will get hired for risk taking alone the other half , damned for all time , until next time. A crazy way of doing things .
