The Only Team in Town – Tasha Otieno sits in a dimly lit room on the outskirts of Nairobi. She has just returned from hockey practice.

The only light in the room comes from a TV streaming a Youtube video of the 2010 Winter Olympics women’s gold medal hockey game between Canada and the USA.

Twenty-three-year-old Tasha is glued to the screen, screaming at the referees, despite having watched this game a dozen times before.

Tasha isn’t alone in Kenya when it comes to a love of ice hockey. She’s one of five women who play on the Nairobi Ice Lions, East Africa’s only women’s hockey team.

This is Flint – “This is Flint!” yelled coach Cory Hightower during halftime of a losing game. “Look at that name on your chest. That’s history.”

Eighteen years ago, three basketball players from Flint, Michigan, nicknamed “The Flintstones”, led Michigan State to their last national title. They had originally competed against each other on three separate Flint high school teams.

Flint has since seen a swift decline in population as a result of an ongoing water and financial crisis. Flint high schools have been closing one by one and there is now only one high school basketball program left in the city – the Flint Jaguars.
