Feature

The Tin Man photo struck us all quickly and immediately rose to the top. The photo of Rene Simard has a good moment with a nice expression.

News

Not a lot to choose from here. The weed smoker was a consensus 1st place, but it dropped off quickly from there. The vigil is a nice quiet moment.

WHITBY -- Mourners held a moment of silence during a candlelight vigil at the Central Branch of the Whitby Library to remember three teens killed in a fire in Whitby four years ago. Hollylynn Towie, 17, Holly Harrison, 18, and Benjamin Twiddy, 19, died in a house fire on Dundas Street on April 29, 2012. A coroner’s inquest recently wrapped up looking into why the teens were killed and how similar deaths might be prevented in the future. April 29, 2016.

Sports

Even though the photo has no ball, we like the way the two expressions work together. The tight swimming picture isn't easy to capture. We had a hard time deciding between 3 and HM, but the broken hockey stick won out.

Portrait

Quite a few nice entries in the category. The portrait of the swimmer immediately jumped to the top and was a consensus 1st place, it's striking with nice color and took forethought. We required a bit of discussion to place the rest. The lines and colors of #2 was enough to push it ahead. Though we like the leading lines and soft light of #3, after reading the cutline we wish it had a little more character of the subject.

Multipic

This was by far the toughest category to judge, but for the wrong reasons. None of the entries look like they were shot in more than one day, and several looked like they were shot in a hour or less. They all lacked intimacy and story lines. 1st place needs a much tighter edit, there are lots of redundant images. Often times less is more and this entry should probably be five images. 2nd place has several nice images, but still feels like a daily assignment that would be a nice combo not a picture story.
