JUDGES

Chad Surmick, Director of Photography, Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Kent Porter, Senior Photographer, Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Beth Schlanker, Staff Photographer, Santa Rosa Press Democrat

Judges’ comments follow category heads.

Feature

Judges felt this was one of the stronger categories, several images could have placed, but attention to cropping may have helped several images place in the top three. The seagull picture was nicely done.  Simple and clean.  Second place garnered discussion, but seemed to be the best of the graphic photos entered in the category.  Third was the was the better of two toboggan photos, but because of the saucer and girl flying through the air, it won out over the canoe/toboggan.

Spot News

Very weak category.  Only two awards given.  First place of an ice rescue /search was the clear winner.  Second place of a stabbing scene could have used cropping to make a better impact.

February 7, 2016 - Members of the York Regional Police setup following an overnight stabbing at 120 Interchange in Vaughan.

News

Another very weak category, but the two winners rose to the top fairly quickly.  Captions really helped both of these images.  We did not award a third place, simply because the images lacked a certain amount of visual information. Quiet moments to be sure, good daily photos, but not award winners.

First place media scrum of the man accused of sexual assault was better than a tight image of him getting out of the car; it gave more information and gave a sense of place.
Second place was a nice moment between a defib patient and his rescuers.

Sports

Another strong category.  First place of hoops above the rim was compelling with a very clean and graphic background. Second place of a Hockey jube was different, but could have been cropped to make more of an impact.  Third of a hockey fight was the better of two, the action and sense of place won out. Honorable mention of the wrestling showed good faces on the girls. with good lens selection.

Portrait

Strong category, all three images consisted of good thinking, use of light, framing and rule of thirds.  First place of the portrait through the helmet, while done before, has good composition, framing and a clean background with good information.  Second place was a meatier portrait, nicely done, but a few distracting elements. Small elements to be sure, but when the photos are this close you have to make a decision!

Third place of the NBA agent was nicely lit, toned and framed.  We did notice though that captions included "poses for a portrait" We think it's obvious that these people are posing for us, but the information included in the captions suffices without mentioning 'poses'.  Just a thought.

Multipic

Judges felt that both the stories entered lacked strong moments, details and variety.  The photos, while good on their own, did not tell a story. No awards given
