FEATURE

Comments: First and second place rose to the top because of the photographers’ intimacy to the events. Both images really engage the viewer and bring them right into the experience. Much deliberation between the two, but ultimately opted for the comedy troupe photo with it’s multiple layers and clearer facial expressions. Third place is a unique, can’t miss photo op that left us hoping for a slightly more engaging subject or moment, but still, nicely done.

NEWS

Comments: First place is a nice intimate moment from what’s probably a pretty controlled event. Liked the facial expressions and photographer’s proximity to the subjects. Second place is an eye-catching moment from a unique event. For the third place photo, we appreciated the photographer’s effort to make a unique image away from the scheduled event.

SPORTS

Comments: Many excellent images and tough calls in this category. Peak action, thought, ultimately elevated each of the winners. Could almost feel the impact in the first place image. Second place was very unique look at a pretty frenetic event. More excellent action in the third place, photo, especially with the inclusion of the goalkeeper.

SPOT NEWS

Comments: Minimal number of entries in this category, but the winners all presented the viewer with some peak action moments. First place was our clear winner as a result. Second place was also a nice, spontaneous capture. Third place photo captured the situation well.

Witnesses reported the male driver sped into the oncoming lane along 96th Ave slamming into at least 3 vehicles before his vehicle became disabled. When bystanders came to help, he pulled a knife and threatening them. The group was able to subdue him til police arrived. No major injuries reported.

PORTRAIT

Comments: An array of very nice entries in this broadly entered category prompted some difficult decisions. The backstory on the first place award eventually pushed this quiet image to the top. Thought the monochrome approach also suited the subject well. Second place was a unique, but appropriate, capture from the event. Appreciated the light, framing and subject’s body posture in the third place image.

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Several excellent efforts in the essay category, that really showed involvement and time commitments from the photographers. Much discussion between the top two spots, with the comedy troupe series eventually winning out due to its execution, variety of candid and humorous moments and tighter edit. Tough to relegate the lamb story to second place as it is exceptional, too - sharing a wide variety unique, and beautifully-lit moments with the viewer. Third place was solid, but we thought a tighter edit and a little more emotion would have enhanced it.
