    Eddie Esquirol started working with horses when he was 17 years old. He was fascinated with them and wanted to breed and watch the whole process from foaling to training to their first time on the track. “With no Marquis Downs, it’s really disappointing.” says Esquirol. Marquis Downs, Saskatchewan’s only certified race track, has been permanently shut. Photo published in Saskatoon on September 24, 2021.

Esquirol is like a horse midwife, being on call all hours of the night to help each mare foal and help them nurse.There’s a 52 percent chance of a successful foaling with thoroughbred horses in Saskatchewan.     On the bed of his truck in the middle of his farm near Saskatoon, George Gervais skims through boxes of winner’s circle photos from his many years of training and racing thoroughbred horses across Canada. Scott, who has a disability, says it will be challenging to find another workplace that suits his skill set now that the track is permanently closed. Hartmann says she’s “disheartened” by the closure of Saskatchewan’s only race track and worries for people in the industry, like her aunt, who can’t make drastic career changes at this point in their lives.
