If you’re a Canadian Nikon NPS member, you should have received the email stating that Nikon Professional Services (Canada) is now a paid service.   Canon did this a few years ago and Nikon USA did it a year ago.

NPS does have a free tier but that only gets you “priority repairs.” The other features don’t really have any value. So plan on spending either $200/year or $400/year. But a paid NPS membership should pay for itself if you rely on loaner gear, get your gear serviced/repaired each year, and/or you buy a few thousand dollars of new Nikon products each year.

However it’s a tough pill to swallow for those of us who recall that NPS was free for the past 40+ years. It was a huge incentive to buy Nikon. I guess times have changed, costs are up, and camera sales are down.

When I was your age, (free) NPS Canada included virtually unlimited loaners and even some instant loans (“I need a 500mm lens and I’ll pick it up in 30 minutes!”), while-u-wait or next-day repairs, some repairs done for free (okay maybe that wasn’t the official policy but it happened several times), free Nikon swag and free “Larry” 😉

Forgive my late reply on this, but I can understand the frustration. As a Canon user who came of age when they had already moved to the paid service, and there was literally no betting with regards to actual working professionals vs hobbyists. It alway seems like you’re second fiddle to a corporate accountant with a kid on the soccer team because they have the cash to splash. I’ve come across guys using Canon, Nikon, Sony, shooting junior hockey for free (oil and gas job) bragging about getting review copies of the latest and greatest.

I let my membership lapse when in 2020 Canon Pro Services announced they were suspending the actual servicing and wouldn’t refund me the majority of the year I had left. We’ll see if they continue snubbing third party lenses as mine start to die off.
