Comments: Judges loved the patience by photographers in the winning entries. The first place image of the vaccination mural with person walking in front of it was fantastic. The peak moment aspect really drove the image as the person walking is wearing a mask and is about to walk near the vaccine. Second place was a really nice moment of the mother and child. The subtle intimate moment really made this image stand out. Third place was a well executed image with the frame filled with lots of information including the dry leaves hanging from the fence. We awarded the Olympic kiss as an HM because we thought it was more of a general news image than a feature, but enjoyed the layering and moment.

    NEWS

Comments: Judges thought the image of the downed Queen Victoria statue was well executed. The man atop the statue placing the flag really made this image very powerful. Nice work by the photographer to capture a moment in history where communities are eliminating statues they deem offensive. Second place image was very nice moment of the young vigil participant. The composition and exposure were well done. We thought the image of the girl in the third place photo was a very nice subtle moment that showed the young girl perfectly framed by the other participants. Kudos to the photographer for reacting on such a unique moment. The image of protesters atop the statue foundation really tells the story, especially with the other participants looking on. The woman wearing the Canada flag upside down as a shirt was a nice touch.

    SPORTS

Comments: Judges were very pleased to see this image. As one judge mentioned from a previous conversation years ago with another of the judge, a great sports image is when the athlete is somehow flipped upside down. This image not only shows a great look into the jockey’s facial expression while being bucked off the bronc, but the body language says a lot with the jockey holding tight to the rope. The background is soft enough that it is not distracting. Second place was awarded to the photo of the finish line moment because it has so much information in the layering. The thrill of victory and agony of defeat is felt. Kudos to the photographer for including information in the caption about the person in the foreground as it helped build just how cool the moment was. Third place image is well executed where you can see the athlete’s face. The toes of the athlete in blue as well as the foot in the air of the athlete in white really give a sense of power and motion. Honorable mention was awarded to this image because it was very clean and the movement is felt with the spraying of the water.

    PORTRAIT

Comments: Judges thought the image of the school survivor really was well done with the ray of light hitting the face. There’s so much detail in his emotion and the images is well photographed to drive this man’s story. Well done. The portrait of the comedians really felt comfortable. Their reactions really tell us who they are and a bit more about what they do. Their smiles/laughs are contagious to the judges eyes. Third place was awarded to the athlete portrait because it was a nice clean image . Technically, it was well exposed. However, it could have used a crop and had the feet not been cut off, it would have gotten a higher placement in this category. Honorable mention was awarded because the photographer used a lot of leading lines that emphasized the nurse.

    1. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

    SPOT NEWS

Comments: Judges were wowed by the first place image. Out of all the entries in all the categories, this is the image that was unanimously given a first place without any conversation. The image is a perfect depiction of what happened during this event. The official’s body language as well as the protester being held down really shows lots of urgency and impact. Kudos for a well-written caption that told us what happened as a result of being struck by this officer. Second place has a lot of the same feel as first place. It’s a great moment showing what happened at this event. Third place is just a beautiful image of the fire coverage. The helicopter is placed at the focal point of the fire, which made the image very moving. Honorable mention was awarded to the image of the vehicle driving by the fire because it gave a human element to the fire.

    MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Judges thought the first place story of the local store was the most complete with not a lot of redundancy and  really liked the flow of images that built upon each other. This was a well executed community story. Second place was awarded with the story with the most diverse set of images. However, there was a lot of redundancy in the images and there were many that could have been cut out of the story. However, the different moments, angles and emotions really told a complete story. Third place was much like second place with too many images. This story had a lot of great individual images, but a flow was not felt, which hurt it in placing higher. Judges loved the images depicting how children related to the other participants in this story. Honorable mentioned was given to a very nice set of images relating to current news events with pets adopted during the pandemic. Technically, the images had a strong vignetting, which hurt in placing atop the top three.

At Pro-Anima, an animal shelter near Montreal. There has been a lot of adoption with the pandemic because of people working fro5m home. But there is more worries about going back to school and work in September, with many dogs at risk of being sent to shelters due to behavioral problems caused by separation anxiety. These “COVID dogs,” and cats who were adopted just before or during lockdown, have not been exposed to a wide range of situations, which can make them extremely anxious.
