Judges
Nick Didlick, contract editorial and commercial photographer and digital photo consultant, Vancouver
Andy Clark, two-time Photojournalist of the Year in Canada, Vancouver
Richard Lam, sport, editorial and commercial photographer, VancouverComments: The picture selections were weak in every category, and image cropping was poor on many photos. It appeared that photographers just threw everything against the wall and wanted to see what would stick. Contestants should only enter what they would feel comfortable displayed on their home or office walls.
Many pictures were shot from a standing position which was frightening and disappointing. The use of lenses and angles is the key to photojournalism. Explore the story; be inquisitive when using your camera.
On Picture story, if you can’t tell the story in 5-7 images, you missed the story or the editing selection. When photo editing images, remember that every pixel counts. Show us as judges/readers what’s necessary when cropping your image and nothing else. If we have to find the picture in the picture or eliminate distracting elements, the viewer connection is lost.
Too many of the entries appeared not to be thinking but just shooting. Think about the story and images, then Shoot. Not Shoot, then think about the story.
