The program follows the CAF’s Primary Reserve Basic Military Qualifications (BMQ) format but weaves in cultural teachings and considerations for participants.

The program is divided into three platoons, Taypotat, Pechawis, and Wolfe each named in honour of prominent Indigenous veterans, from Afghanistan and the Second World War. Each platoon trains and bunks together throughout the 6 week course.

In partnership with the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, the six-week-long program based in the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Central Alberta, is one of five regional programs across Canada that are made exclusively for Indigenous youth.

Guiboche says she doesn’t intend on pursuing a career in the CAF but is planning on enrolling in Film School after graduating Bold Eagle. There is no obligation for graduates to pursue a career in the CAF since Bold Eagle is first and foremost a youth development program that seeks to cultivate leadership, fitness, teamwork and resiliency.

Conversation around tobacco offerings, in particular when to offer, highlighted a difference between the many cultures present in Bold Eagle Over a half a dozen First Nations and Métis settlements were typically present in a single section creating a diverse cross section of Western Canadian indigenous cultures.
