Carrying Pat

Marta Iwanek, Freelance for the Waterloo Region Record.

Pat Murphy always told his wife Eileen that he would care for her when they got older. But on December 2, 2010, the Murphy’s lives were turned upside down in a way neither of them would have imagined.

Pat had a major stroke and Eileen determined she would care for him at home no matter what it took.

“I love him very much and I have a lot of faith that things can improve. And if they don’t, I’m still not going to stop loving the man. He’s my partner.”

“Yup,” says Pat.

2013 National Pictures of the Year Nominees

CANADA’S TOP PHOTOJOURNALISTS RECOGNIZED

Great photos tell stories. They transcend language and cultural barriers and speak to basic human nature. A great photo is a snapshot of time that can reveal the world’s most profound tales of heartbreak, joy and reality with one single image.

The News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) is pleased to recognize the excellence represented in submissions by 128 of Canada’s outstanding photojournalists in announcing the nominations in the eighth annual National Pictures of the Year (NPOY) awards competition.

More than 1150 images from across Canada were entered in this year’s competition, representing a spectacular body of work.

The winners will be announced during the 2013 National Pictures of the Year Gala event which will be held May 24, 2014, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The NPOY judging by Lana Slezic, Louie Palu and Ken Faught was live-streamed online so photographers and the public could view the process.

“We decided to live-stream the judging process this year for greater transparency and to allow photographers the opportunity to learn from watching their work being judged” said Ben Nelms, Vice President of NPAC.

2013 NPOY Judging

The 2013 NPOY judging has been completed (and the live coverage has ended). A big “thank you” to the judges Lana Slezic, Louie Palu and Ken Faught.

Moe Doiron, The Globe and Mail’s photo editor, organized and moderated the judging.

Ryan Jackson, staff photographer and multimedia producer extraordinaire (see his blog) for the Edmonton Journal, was responsible for the live video streaming and other technical magic.

Note: The five-hour video (above) has been edited to remove the several pauses that were used to hide the winning pictures, the lunch break, coffee breaks, etc.
