Comments: Great expression on the foreground kid’s face lifts this very dynamic action-packed picture out of the ordinary.
    1. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

A young boy watches from below as fairgoers ride the Sea-to-Sky Swinger at the Pacific National Exhibition Fair, in Vancouver, on Thursday, September 1, 2022. The 15-day event, which runs through Sept. 5, is the PNE’s first full scale fair since prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal government announced this week that $10 million in funding for facility and infrastructure upgrades will be provided to the Pacific National Exhibition.

Comments: Great use of the beautiful light and shadows, spot-on composition, and various people’s movements in the picture is captured at the perfect moment.
    2. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

A woman holds a corndog while using her phone as other people walk past claw games at the Pacific National Exhibition Fair, in Vancouver, on Thursday, September 1, 2022. The 15-day event, which runs through Sept. 5, is the PNE’s first full scale fair since prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal government announced this week that $10 million in funding for facility and infrastructure upgrades will be provided to the Pacific National Exhibition.

Comments: Terrific moody picture, great light and composition.
    3. John Lucas/Freelance

The Carvel Weather Radar dome meets a storm up close and personal near Stony Plain AB on Wednesday Sept 7, 2022.

Comments: This wonderfully-composed image brought a smile to our faces, and we loved the inclusion of the cyclist on the left of the frame stopping to shoot the scene, instead of just concentrating on the balloons. Great use of colour too.
    H.M. Jeff McIntosh/The Canadian Press

    NEWS

Comments: A well-spotted, beautiful moment, which encapsulates the whole point of the Every Child Matters protest. It’s beautifully composed and is brimming with emotion and tenderness. This is a subject we saw frequently throughout the contest – which also amplifies the importance of the Every Child Matters movement. We saw this image as an intrinsic celebration of culture and care.
    1. Laura Proctor/The Hoser

Jingle dress dancer Indiana Cada hugs her father, Isaiah Cada, at a ceremony on The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at Tollkeeper’s Park in Toronto on September 30, 2022.

Comments: A very difficult and poignant subject to photograph handled with great tact and dignity, with great use of colour and attention to detail. A feat in storytelling, an image that implores empathy and understanding.
    2. Marie-France Coallier/Le Devoir

ST JEAN SUR RICHELIEU, QC SEPTEMBER 9, 2022 – Carole Thibodeau holds her daughter’s photograph. About a year ago, her sixteen-year-old daughter took her own life.

Comments: A well-composed picture on a global story packed with details which tell the story – the short-cropped hair on the protestor raising a fist, the person draped in an Iranian flag peeking into the frame, a glimpse of a map of Iran, the person documenting everything on her iPhone. Very well spotted moment in a fast-moving situation.
    3. Laura Proctor/Freelance

A woman raises her first as she shouts “Mahsa Amini” at a protest in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square after the September 16th death of 22-year-old Amini while in the custody of Iran’s “morality police”. September 23, 2022

Comments: Great example of what street photography should be all about, with multiple elements in an excellently composed picture which could all work very well as individual and separate images in themselves. A natural scene that gives a nod to the great American street photographers of the mid-20th century, while providing clues of modern times and contemporary issues.
    H.M. Laura Proctor/the Hoser

A young man marches by Dufferin Street residents during Toronto’s annual Labour Day Parade on September 5, 2022.

    SPORTS

Comments: Great action shot of the sort we’ve seen a million times, but once you realise you’re not looking at a teenager but an elderly man, it takes on a whole new dimension with its powerful story-telling. It was important to the jury to put forward an image we felt could defy expectations and encourage movement and playfulness cross-generationally.
    1. Matthew Smith/Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Tom Ray, who is 69 years old, rides the bowl at the Lions Skate Park in Saskatoon, SK on Monday, September 12, 2022.

Comments: Wonderful light, composition and use of long lens perspective compression – a strong picture which really tells a story. The image is emotive, natural and breaks the stereotypical narrative fed to us where strength and fitness are predominantly linked with youth. It was important for the jury to put forward an image of an athlete who again exemplifies the importance of physical movement and exercise throughout the years.
    2. Kevin Light/ Freelance

Jennifer Walinga, retired rower who competed for the Canadian National Rowing team between the 1980’s to 1990’s rows in a single sculling boat on Elk Lake in Victoria, British Columbia Canada on September 22nd, 2022.

Comments: Well-executed image which captures the peak of the action. Great facial expression and energy on the soccer player, with the added element of a spot of luck with the composition, making him look as though he’s about to crush a dejected opponent under his boot to really drive the point home.
    3. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

Vancouver Whitecaps’ Tosaint Ricketts celebrates his goal against the Los Angeles Galaxy during the second half of an MLS soccer game in Vancouver, on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

Comments: This caught our eye because it has such a different feel from the norm. It looks like fashion photography, very different and unusual in this genre. And we loved the kid in the background watching the player.
    H.M. Michelle Berg/Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Saskatoon Blades’ Braden Plaschewsky skates on ice for his season home opener at SaskTel Centre. Photo taken in Saskatoon on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

Comments: Fantastic composition and well-executed image. The scene within the frame of the image is action-packed and interesting and is also different from your typical sports shot.
    H.M. Nick Iwanyshyn/Freelance

Brent Miller carries his bike on the run-up during a UCI cyclocross race in Rochester, New York, Sunday, September 29, 2022.

    PORTRAIT

Comments: Eye-catching and amusing character-study, with wonderful details scattered around the image which enhance the story-telling. Interesting aspect was knowing that this person was an artist without having to read the caption. We appreciated also the parallel of the background self-portrait balancing the foreground of the figure in the image.
    1. Marie-France Coallier/Le Devoir

Photographed at his home in Montreal, Evergon the artist, born in 1946 in Niagara Falls, sums up his first major retrospective at Musee des Beaux Arts du Québec: “Some images might not shock you. » Through the portrait — and the self-portrait —, the landscape, the still life, and by means of different process.

Comments: Wonderful muted colours and textures caught our eye. As soon as you see the image, you instinctively know the story behind it. We also believe that it is vital to put forward an environmental story.
    2. Chad Hipolito/The Globe and Mail

Forest defender Josh Wright poses for a portrait between Fairy Creek and the Central Walbran area that contains old growth specklebelly lichen which is an indicator of a unique area with high biodiversity near Port Renfrew, B.C., on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.

Comments: Showcasing the heritage of First Nations people is clearly an integral part of Canadian culture, we felt this was a strong celebration of this heritage. The low angle and composition, shot against the light, makes this a very dramatic portrait full of gravitas.
    3. Matthew Smith/Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Men’s traditional dancer Josh Bear attends the STC powwow at SaskTel Centre as part of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Photo taken in Saskatoon, SK on Friday, September 30, 2022.

    SPOT NEWS

Comments: Though we can’t see the forest fire itself, we immediately recognise that’s what the picture is all about. Great composition and colour.
    1. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

Helicopters with water buckets battling the Flood Falls Trail wildfire pick up water from the Fraser River, in Hope, B.C., on Monday, September 12, 2022.

Comments: Different sort of forest fire image to the usual, utilising the reflections on the water and the smoke haze in the sky to great effect. It looks so peaceful though we know it’s anything but, as we can clearly see how dangerously close the fire is approaching towards an inhabited area. We also felt that the environment and impacts of climate change is a vital news item to bring to the forefront.
    2. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press

    MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Beautiful, thorough, conveying heritage as well as the environmental crisis which is one of the most pressing issues we face today. We wanted to ensure this story was given adequate attention as it is an important and constructive environmental story, with beautiful individual images. Not only does it showcase the vast beauty of Canadian nature but also its fragility, the efforts of First Nation’s people and contemporary Canadian citizens in the face of the climate crisis whilst constructively exhibiting a prospective solution.

Comments: Strong edit and narrative with the photographer clearly knowing how he/she was going to celebrate and depict the culture, perhaps taking a different approach at an event which likely was saturated with photographers. Good use of different angles, some very strong individual images. We saw throughout the contest that stories around the celebration of First Nation’s culture is pressing, as well as the every child matters campaign – altogether, we felt that the complexity and multi-societal impact of this subject is best exemplified within a richer multi-image story such as this. We also liked how the photographer choose to depict the event in a way where the cultural uniqueness of the community is highlighted and celebrated.

Comments: Powerful story, you really grasp the story from the images, though the edit could have been tighter. It’s a strong and clear narrative, exposing the segregation that has taken place in Canada in the past, highlighting a story that is perhaps usually under the radar. Visually interesting, good use of colour and symmetry and a good mix of images.

Comments: A visually-interesting take on how Canada reacted to Queen Elizabeth’s death, with a variety of unrepetitive images. A topical news assignment coverage, just documenting what went down that day but with an interesting mix of images. Overall, it’s an interesting story because of Canada’s past and including the protest in it is a valuable addition to that.
