Comments: This is an interesting composition. Even though there’s a lot to look at here, your eye may wander but it doesn’t get lost. Appreciate the camera angle and the patience the photographer had waiting for this scene to develop.

We loved that it’s so tight and that the faces are in opposite directions. The shallow depth of field helps strengthen the photo.
2. Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press
Vancouver Whitecaps’ Sebastian Berhalter, front right, and Nashville FC’s Sean Davis vie for the ball during the first half of an MLS soccer game in Vancouver, on Saturday, August 27, 2022.Comments: This was a fun off-rink moment. It can be difficult to get the puck in a photo like this and yet the composition is clean, there isn’t any wasted space and the body language is good.
3. Jeff McIntosh/The Canadian Press

A little more action or context would have pushed this up.

Comments: We loved the mood of this and the richness of color. And there’s a bit of humor with the dog seeming to mimic her/his owner in a languid pose. The bored ennui comes through the body language and the paired expressions.
1. Kevin Light/ Freelance
Jazz and blues singer Heather Ferguson poses for a portrait with her dog in her home in Oak Bay British Columbia on August 3rd, 2022.Comments: There’s an intensity to this portrait, we meet his gaze in a kind of psychological closeness as if you are in his sphere of thinking. Very nice use of reflections and a clever color scheme that increase the depth and quality of this portrait.
2. Marie-France Coallier/Le Devoir
Kevin Lambert, the 29-year-old writer risks, while continuing his reflection on capitalism, surprising the readers of his first two novels.. The novelist offers himself a foray into the world of the ultra-rich. Those who make and unmake the world.Comments: There’s a wonderful soft energy to this. An interesting gesture and a pensive expression make this somewhat ethereal. Heavy vignetting brought this down a bit.

Comments: Much raw emotion in this story of tragic loss. By choosing long focal length lenses the photographer did not intrude on people’s grief and was able to be respectful while making well-organized compositions with a variety of proximities to the mourners.
