Between Liberties

The incidence of asylum seekers entering Canada illegally has risen sharply in 2016 and 2017. Experts, analysts and the asylum seekers themselves are citing an increasingly racially hostile political climate in the US as the primary reason behind the surge. The Safe Third Country Agreement, a post 9/11 law which prevents anyone with an outstanding refugee claim in the US from entering Canada lawfully, has prompted tens of thousands of illegal border crossings in Manitoba and Québec. Alt-right, anti-immigration groups have begin to demonstrate across Canada, opposing the influx of prospective refugees. Subsequent counter-protests have led to arrests and violent clashes.
