Iona Whipp
 Michelle Berg / Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Saskatoon drag queen Iona Whipp, the performance alter ego of Aron DoSouto, is funny, glamorous and over-the-top, but she takes her art very seriously and takes great care to remember those who came before. Aron DoSouto applies makeup during his three-hour transformation into drag queen Iona Whipp.

MYTORONTO
 Anne-Marie Jackson / Toronto Star

A look at the inaugural MYTORONTO photo contest, which placed disposable cameras in the hands of people who have experienced homelessness and ask them to take images of the city from their perspective. Each of the top 13 winners received a $200 cash prize. The cover prize was $500. A calendar was produced and vendors were given permission to sell them on the streets. Participants buy calendars for $10 and sell them for $20, often putting money into the hands of those who needed it most.

Women’s March
 David Zelikovitz / Maclean’s

Donna Ferrato, 67, is a photographer, photojournalist and activist who’s been documenting women for more than three decades. Her work, as she notes, focuses on “the stuff that really challenges women,” including domestic violence, reproductive rights, work and employment issues. Ferrato’s groundbreaking series on domestic violence resulted in her seminal book Living with the Enemy, in the early 1990s, and helped lead to the Violence Against Women Act. She’s photographed numerous protests over the course of her career, and she agreed to be behind the lens again for Maclean’s at the Women’s March on Washington on Jan. 21, 2017.

Down the hall Ebrahim Toure has never been charged or convicted of any crime but also sits behind bars because the government cannot deport him. A failed refugee claimant, Toure is one of the hundreds of unwanted immigrants Canada has locked up indefinitely across the country, many in maximum-security jails rather than special immigration detention centres.
