Carrying Pat
– Marta Iwanek, Freelance for the Waterloo Region Record.
Pat Murphy always told his wife Eileen that he would care for her when they got older. But on December 2, 2010, the Murphy’s lives were turned upside down in a way neither of them would have imagined.
Pat had a major stroke and Eileen determined she would care for him at home no matter what it took.
“I love him very much and I have a lot of faith that things can improve. And if they don’t, I’m still not going to stop loving the man. He’s my partner.”
“Yup,” says Pat.
“And when you take a partner, you should take them for life,” says Eileen.
A Higher Passion

Higher Passion Wrestling, a backyard wrestling federation in Coolville, Ohio, is more than a hobby for a small community of family and friends.
Kaitlyn Leis and the Number 9
– Mathew McCarthy, Waterloo Region Record
At only fifteen years old, Kaitlyn Leis has passed her steam engineer exam. As a volunteer at the Waterloo Central Railway in St. Jacobs, Ontario, Leis can pilot the 90-year-old Number 9 steam engine under the guidance of two qualified engineers. To do it on her own, all she needs is a few more hours of experience and a few more birthdays.

Dead in Six Days: The Story of Baby Delonna

Four-month-old Delonna Sullivan died in foster care six days after she was taken away. Meanwhile her mother fought the legitimacy of her capture in the first place. Read the full story.

Red McGillivray’s ice boat, the Red Baron, races over the frozen Bay of Quinte in Trenton, Ontario. McGillivary, who had a head on collision with another boater last year, says he falls into the icy waters at least once every season. At 84 years old, McGillivary is still an avid ice boater who says to have reached speeds of 170 km/h over his 75 years of boating.
Swimming Deaf

Thomas Osborn, 17, has trained relentessly for the 2013 Deafylmpics. By age 10, Osborn lost his hearing. But with a cochlear implant and the help of his family, he has been able to compete as an elite swimmer.
