Title: Income comparison
Post by: Warren Toda on February 21, 2016, 12:40 AM
As it's income tax season, you may be wondering where all your money went:  :)

Using 2011 data, the average full-time photographer in Quebec had an annual income of $29,300 (http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/qc/job_futures/statistics/5221.shtml). There's no reason why this number wouldn't apply nationally.

By comparison, from 2014 USA data, the median pay for a US photographer was $30,490 USD. (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/media-and-communication/photographers.htm#tab-1)

The average photographer in France (http://www.culturecommunication.gouv.fr/Politiques-ministerielles/Etudes-et-statistiques/Publications/Collections-de-synthese/Culture-etudes-2007-2015/Le-metier-de-photographe-CE-2015-3) in 2014 *seemed* to have a  similar income as those in Canada and the USA.

Also, the Canadian government says that job prospects in this occupation are limited and the number of photographers will decrease significantly in the coming years.

But note that the federal gov't is always behind the times. Its web site (http://www30.rhdcc.gc.ca/CNP/English/NOC/2006/Profile.aspx?val=0&val1=5221) still says photographers shoot film and might then scan that film to a computer.

The amount of full time photographers I know who aren't employed as a staff photographer at a newspaper is down to what I can count with my fingers, thumbs excluded.
