A big first for NPAC and probably the first for any photo competition in Canada. The NPOY 2013 judging will be live streamed.
A big thanks to Ryan Jackson who has stepped up to help with the multimedia portion of the competition and oversee the live streaming.
Final details have yet to be worked out and we hope to live stream all categories with the exception of photojournalist of the year and photo of the year.

Nice.

Very cool.

When will this live stream take place?

Get a taste of how fascinating and educational this process can be - watch the POYi Live Judging:

In case it's not obvious, scroll down and click on "Judging - Live Webcasting". Schedule is posted on the site.

Do you have the schedule of judgment NPOY 2013
-
I spent half an hour pressing refresh today for the POYi judging in the Portrait category before the room finally cleared enough to get in. I hope there isn't too small a limit on the NPAC room.
Also any plan to record it for posterity? Great discussions always come up in the POYi, especially when you get down to the last 8-12 images. It's a shame they don't offer the videos for later viewing.

When are we judging?

Judging is scheduled for Saturday March 8th. Final details will be posted here closer to the date.

Saturday March 8: http://npac.ca/2014/03/2013-npoy-judging-livestream/
Start Time: TBA but probably some horrible time in the AM.
Disclaimer: The program may contain coarse language, violence and nudity. Some scenes may be disturbing to viewers. Parental discretion is advised. All stunts are performed by trained professionals. Do not attempt any of these at home. All persons in the program are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
** Added: Start time around 9AM (eastern time) or shortly thereafter. But we all know these things never start on time. :)
No idea how long the opening ceremonies will last: lots of speeches, the traditional Parade of Judges, an interpretative dance number with photojournalism students acting out the history of photography, and a tribute to Kodak featuring Celine Dion singing her classic and emotional "Film will go on forever".

Warren you kill me. ;D
If the judging audio fails, you need to step in a do a running commentary!
-
No more nudity?
-
I know that boardroom…I think
-
I would also strongly suggest that students will benefit tremendously from watching this process and understanding why some photographs work and others don't.
-
couple of observations…
-seeing your work on the screen followed by a chorus of 'Out" = ouch
-while we all need to know how to light and light well, it ain't going to turn a sow's ear into a purse
-it's nice to know who the judges are
great job !

Portrait category was very strong, but the feature and general news categories were lacking — judges struggling with finding good emotion in the photos. You know it's never good when they're going through photos and saying, "keep it in, it's at least something from what we've seen so far."
I love watching the process though, I'm learning lots from the judges' comments. Looking forward to the rest after lunch!

Thankfully it's being archived, I forgot all about it.
Looking forward to the next section starting.

What a humbling experience it is to watch this. Out is now my least favourite word in the english language.

All,
This was good to have the National Pictures of the Year judging streamed live online for the first time. I'd like to remind all members that even though some improvements may be needed, overall the experience was successful and educational. I believe this was a step in the right direction for our organization. At one point I noticed we had 45 viewers online watching the judging which is a pretty good crowd in any room.
We should thank Ryan Jackson and The Edmonton Journal for facilitating the live streaming and Moe Doiron for coordinating and moderating the judges. And of course the judges: Ken Faught, Louie Palu and Lana Slezic who donated their time and efforts to our group. We are truly grateful.
If you missed the broadcast, you can find an archived version at: http://npac.ca/2014/03/2013-npoy-judging-livestream/

Terrific insights, thanks to all who made this happen.
-
To echo what others have said: thanks to all who made this very valuable and insightful look at the judging process possible.
cheers-

The live judging was great to watch. Thanks to Ryan Jackson, Moe Doiron and everyone else involved with setting it up.
Thanks to the judges as well. I think we've established that Louie Palu really likes concert photos that have an animal in them and a tilted horizon.
Will there be a list of the nominees prior to the conference?

Tim, yes the judges certainly made some of their pet peeves known.
Full list of nominees should be posted in next few days. Stay tuned.

All photo nominees have been posted. Multimedia entries will be judged next week. Student Photojournalist of the Year entries will be judged in late May.
Interesting to note that, similiar to last year, there's only one vertical picture and a couple of square images, the rest are horizontal. Hmmm...

More of a funny quote.
I get that judging is subjective but to have a judge not consider a photo because it was a remote is silly.
The contest is all about great pictures, if the image is awesome then the fact that the photographer wasn't "behind the camera" shouldn't matter.
