Title: New Titanic images
Post by: Warren Toda on March 23, 2012, 12:18 AM
Coming up to the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking, National Geographic has published new pictures to coincide with its special April (http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2012/04/titanic/sides-text) magazine issue.

Since it's impossible to light and photograph the remains of the ship in one frame, thousands of images were stitched together. These four pictures (http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2012/04/titanic/bow-mosaic-interactive) use Zoomify.

The folks who did the hard work: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (http://www.whoi.edu/). Apparently, they did the new pictures with an iPhone.  :D

It's hard not to opine about how important newspapers were in reporting the Titanic... and how those very same newspapers are now 100 years later the "sinking ship".

They knew there were icebergs about but chose to be careless... leaving the binoculars behind on the night watch... They chose not to see what was coming.
