Michael Rosenblum is starting what he calls the Magnum of Video. I wonder when something like this will start in Canada.

When you look for historic equivalents the reality of the situation
becomes even more clear . No denial, technology down drafts catch
traditional business , complacent hiding behind its past glory and
traditions . Strangling slowly with nothing but the time it has left.
Strangely familiar. But ,Strangely it endures
The Last Charge
The three thousand years history of cavalry
charges ended during WW1 when horse soldiers met the the machine gun.
This , however was not the last charge of the horse soldier . In
1942 Italian cavalry 600 strong attacked a Soviet force of over
2000 soldiers , using sabres , wait for it , ANNND machine guns .
They lost 40 soldiers and one hundred horses . I love that story.
They won the battle and captured 800 Soviet infantry . The horse
soldier plus the machine.
A gallant last stand .
Horse cavalry morphed into modern tank divisions , light armour ,
then air cavalry in subsequent wars. It never really disappearing ,
but became even more important with time . A decisive moment pushed
the ancient tradition to a new level. The idea of light fast moving
, mobile is still at the heart of the idea. The heart of photography.

Photographers have a
unique perspective often being the chauffeurs to journalism . Over
the years we witness first hand how it all works . So many ,
Personalities, styes , reporting techniques , we see it from the grass
roots , ²sharp end² level . Our eyes are
always up , we have no notebook to stare into .
We do what we always do , we adapt.
Bitch and complain but we adapt.

Question is, is anyone willing pay for it? Video is worthless on most editorial fronts. Not many are willing to hire an actual videographer, or pay for the cost of high production video, when they can make staff photographers do it for no extra cost. From what I understand, by the numbers, people are still not watching newspaper website video. This may work well in other avenues, but I can't see it working in an industry that is tightening it's belt every other day.
