Title: Speaker suggestions for 2013 NPAC
Post by: Ben Nelms on October 09, 2012, 12:37 AM
Hope all had a filling Thanksgiving,

It is time to start thinking about what speakers you would like to see present at the NPAC 2013 conference in April.

If anyone has an idea on a photographer you have always wanted to see, or someone who is working on something that intrigues you right now, let me know.

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Dave, I heard the conference will be in Las Vegas this year. All photos shot in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Actually, it will be held in Calgary.
Cheers
Jimmy

Las Vegas what a great idea. We should really look into holding it there.

Las Vegas; cheap flights, cheap hotels.

I think Vegas would be a great idea, cheap flights for everyone, whole range of hotels, great food, warm weather, and much easier to bring in speakers.

That'd be fun, a Canadian conference in one of the most un-Canadian places haha.

Anyways:

Craig F. Walker (Colorado, two Pulitzers)
Chase Jarvis (Seattle)
Mikey Schaefer (Washington)
Rob Haggart (Colorado)
Zach Arias (Georgia)

Alright, I'll look at Vegas for 2014.  I'll have to check with our Trade Show peeps to make sure that they can bring their kit in.

Meanwhile, I'm working on Calgary.  (I'll put some palm trees in the conference room, if it helps!)

Cheers,
Ali

+1 on Joao

I'm not too sure on the Vegas thing for a Canadian Photojournalism conference, but then, heck, even the CFL  went to Vegas!

That would be great if the planets align for him, he would be amazing, amazing. I'm talking to his boss this week on another subject, but I'll make the pitch to him too.

Forgive me because I'm not sure who's spoken in the past but from Eddie Adams, these were some of the people that I found really inspiring/memorable:

Eugene Richards
John H. White
Ami Vitale
Lynn Johnson
Gregory Heisler
Dan Winters
Darcy Padilla
Christopher Anderson
Emilio Morenatti
John Moore

and Adrees Latif and Jamie Wellford, though I do know they spoke last year.

I would also love to hear Don Weber, Joao Silva and Kevin Frayer

Hey guys,

Just a note to say that I notice quite clearly that there almost all men suggested on these lists and very few women. Just saying

Kate Brooks -She has a remarkable new book
Melina Mara (Washington Post) Chief Political Photog for the Post
Sara Voisin (Washington Post) RFK Award winner and many others
Ruth Fremson (New York Times)
Christinne Muschi (Reuters)
Natalie Matutschovsky (Time Magazine Photo editor, originally from Canada!)

National Geographic Photo Editors there are many to choose from.

Stephen Crowley (New York Times, Pulitzer winner)
David Gilkey (NPR, White House News photographer of the Year 2011)
Chip Somodevilla (Getty, White House News photographer of the Year 2010)

I can help connecting with anyone of these people, though Peter Jones can most likely help more with Christinne.

How about Magnum's Bieke Depoorter.

See my post on the NPAC about young Magnum photogs in the Independent for some background.
