First place was a selected for its strong emotional appeal. We found it to be an honest, well-captured moment illustrating a family’s challenges following a frightening accident. Second award recognizes the photographer’s ability to look beyond the ordinary to find a quieter, but telling moment from an organized event. Third award also had a strong emotional component and the judges like the inter-generational component of the image.

Portrait

Judges gravitated toward the first place entry for its quality of light and the interesting juxtaposition of visual elements. The subject’s refined attire contrasted nicely with the rawer, street art design in the frame. Second place was a nicely-executed image playing on the frame within a frame concept to render an effect that reminded us of a portrait which might be displayed on a museum wall. We also liked the lighting and coloring of the third place entry.

Sports

Judges liked the intimacy and emotional weight of the first place winner. Second place was a peak-moment capture that we thought could have benefited from a tighter crop. Third place photo portrayed strong emotion as well, and we thought the looser crop actually added an appropriate sense of isolation to the subject’s response.
