Judges’ comments after section heads.

All of the feature photographs entered this month were very quiet. They seemed to be moments where the photographers took a step back and let the scene make the photo. We really enjoyed the perspective in the winning image. The colors helped make the second place image pop and we enjoyed the framing and use of silhouette in the third place image.

3. Kenneth Armstrong - Soo Today

A woman and dog walk along the boardwalk in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. on Dec. 12, 2016.

This was a weaker category than the others. We enjoyed the subtle focus and use of light in the first place image. The moment and story of the second place image was so great - we kind of wanted to know more. This photo could use a better crop as well. Third place used a slower shutter speed to add some visual variety to what could be a boring assignment. Good job!

OSHAWA -- The Durham Regional Police Service R.I.D.E. program worked on Wentworth Street. Dec. 13, 2016.

This was a very fun category to judge. There are some REALLY nice portraits making it hard to judge. First place was just a beautiful image. Wonderful light and story. Wonderful composition and angle. Second place was beautiful as well. The color and framing are spectacular. Third place made us stop and look. How wonderful to see the subject silhouetted but in the reflection we were able to see his face. So interesting. We gave an honorable mention to the puddle reflection image. Though it wasn’t all the way there, we wanted to give it a nod for the creativeness and chance taken.

Another wonderful category full of great images. First place stood out though. The story, composition and excitement were very eye-catching. We really liked the vantage point of the second place image. The color was very nice as well. Third place offered the best action with a fall on the face.
