JUDGES

Photo Department, The Indianapolis Star

Judges’ comments after section heads.

Feature

Most of the photos submitted for this category should have been in General News. Just because the image 'looks' like a feature doesn't mean it is. If the event you are covering is planned, the photo belongs in General News. With that said, these two images were the only couple that actually fit in the category. I really enjoyed the composition of the water fountain photo. The fact that there is only one kid helped keep the image clean and easy to read. The pumpkin patch photo was cute and a nice moment.

News

Strongest category by far. The 1st place image stood out immediately. Trying to pull a nice image from a ceremony or press conference is tough. I enjoy the use of light to create a moody, clean image. The second place of RCMP officers was a nice graphic depiction of the day. I really enjoyed the third place image and it could have placed higher if the caption information stated why the father was looking up at the sky. To the photographer who shot this, go ask. Maybe the father will give you a great quote.

Sports

There were three clear winners in one of the heavier participated in categories. I really, really enjoyed the shirt over the head photo with the celebrating player in the background. Second place was awarded due to the playfulness of the thumb-sucking soccer player, it definitely made me laugh. Third place was one of very, very few examples of peak sports action. One thing I noticed with a lot of the submitted images was a clear lack of understanding that cropping is needed. Cropping is an art, not to be overlooked.

The clear winner was the jumping ballerina. I thoroughly enjoyed the location of the image, the color of her outfit that helped her jump out. I really had a hard time choosing the rest of the places because all of the images were so similar. Subject facing off the camera or on the camera with a sad looking face. Get away from that, please. I awarded second place due strictly on the contrast in colors. I know how this would play in print and it would definitely pull viewers in. Third place was awarded due to the nice use of natural light.
