FEATURE

Comments: First stood out for its depth of composition and light. Second was also quickly noticed by the tree judges as something that stood out for its oddity. It was agreed that third was a very nice moment but had a poor choice for cropping. Several images suffered from poor cropping.

1. Lyle Aspinall/Postmedia

Levi Nicol drives past Justin Harper during a game of basketball at Cornerstone Youth Centre in Calgary, Alta., on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016. Cornerstone Youth is one of the agencies that benefits from the Calgary Herald Christmas Fund.

Teyvin Schafer jumps off a swing at Tulista park in Sidney, British Columbia, Canada on November 11th, 2016.

NEWS

Comments: We strongly agreed that first was executed very well to make it a great illustration of the popular supermoon event. Second is a powerful moment that was initially partly overlooked for its loose crop. Third earned interest after discussion for being illustrative of post-invasion Iraq.

1. Lyle Aspinall/Postmedia

The supermoon rises behind downtown Calgary, Alta., on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. It was the largest supermoon since 1948.

 2. Jeff Mcintosh/The Canadian Press

3. Gavin John/Freelance

Residence of Mosul walk alongside a Iraqi Special Forces Humvee in Mosul, Iraq on Saturday Nov 12, 2016.

SPORTS

Comments: First was selected before the judges even looked at it. It was by far the strongest image in the month. Second was a great twist  of an otherwise standard skiing image. It shows good editing skills for chosen this image to compete. Third is a great illustration of a CFL win. Judges agreed that colours and contrast made this image pop. HM deserves an honourable mention for its creative angle.

1. Darryl Dyck/Freelance

Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Ryan Smith dives for the goal line to score his second touchdown against the B.C. Lions during first half western semifinal CFL football action in Vancouver, B.C., on Sunday November 13, 2016.

Jake Vold takes part in during the first go-round of Tie Down Roping at the Canadian Finals Rodeo at Northlands Coliseum, in Edmonton on Wednesday Nov. 9, 2016.

SPOT NEWS

Comments: While the peak news of first had passed, this is a nice moment to illustrate a tragedy. Second was a good execution of a rather minor spot news event although the loose crop detracted somewhat from its strength. Third showed good incentive to catch an overview image of fire that was still raging.

1. Darryl Dyck/The Globe and Mail

A young woman pauses before placing flowers at a memorial for a female student that died after being stabbed Tuesday at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School, in Abbotsford, B.C., on Wednesday November 2, 2016. A barefoot assailant entered a high school in Abbotsford on Tuesday and stabbed two female students, one fatally, in what officials described as a “random act of violence.”

2. Shane MacKichan/for the North Delta Reporter

A man who was vacuuming his car at a North Delta car wash was shot multiple times on Oct 24th. Emergency crews responded and treated him for gunshots wounds in the leg and buttocks. He was transported in stable condition. Police report that this was a targeted shooting. Suspects are still outstanding

3. Shane MacKichan/for Peace Arch News

A father, mother and 3 yr old child were struck by a car as they crossed the street in South Surrey on Nov 3rd. Amazingly, all victims suffered only minor injuries

PORTRAIT

Comments: The creativity of first and second were immediately apparent. Second suffered slightly for its overly dark exposure since the “naked” aspect was not immediately evident. After discussion, third gained traction for being a clean image of a story-making character. The angle, however, moved it only to third place.

1. Leah Hennel/Calgary Herald

Stampeders running back Jerome Messam poses for a portrait on Friday November 18, 2016.

2. Leah Hennel/Calgary Herald
You canít always judge a book by its cover. Or, in this case, without its cover. Keely Kamikaze, a burlesque dancer, happens to be the producer of Naked Girls Reading.

 3. Darryl Dyck/The Globe and Mail

Journalist Mohamed Fahmy, who was imprisoned in Egypt for nearly two years, adjusts his jacket before posing for a photograph outside a coffee shop after an interview with The Globe and Mail about his new book 'The Marriott Cell', in Vancouver, B.C., on Tuesday November 8, 2016.

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Judges had a difficult time with the multi-pic category. The stories themselves were quite interesting but several collections lacked proper execution. Alternatively, some had a better execution but a weaker story.
