FEATURE

Comments: Overall a weak category. First place was the standout for mood and overall strangeness. Second place was a tight, dramatic moment, even if it wasn’t a unique image. Third place was a pretty scene and well-composed.

NEWS

Comments: Another weak category with lots of similar images of the royal visit. First place was the winner for mood, moment, and access. Second place was a good moment but probably should have been cropped tighter. Third place made us laugh, but needed context to justify a higher award position.

SPORTS

Comments: The strongest category judged, by far, with many good entries. First place wins for its dramatic and moving moment. Second place is just a great hockey-fight frame. Third place is a graphic capture of the moments that happen outside of the game action.

1. Leah Hennel/Calgary Herald

PORTRAIT

Comments: First place stood out for its great combination of light, composition, and moment. Second and third place were well-lit with distinct moods.

SPOT NEWS

Comments: Another category with few strong entries. First place was the most dramatic of the entries and stood out from the rest. Second place was a great juxtaposition of a news event with everyday life. Third place was a quick, clean, easy read.[/i]

1. Shane MacKichan/Freelance

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Only one entry in this category had less than 12 images, and every entry would have benefitted from much tighter edits. First place, despite having too many images, was the strongest contender thanks to its cohesion and many strong photos. Second place utilized depth and varied storytelling, but also had too many images. Third place offered a well-shot look at the winery, but also had too many images.
