FEATURE

Comments: The winning frame used its space well, without anything extraneous in the image. It has a good flow, with a ton going on but still feels clean. Nice center of visual interest with the smile. Second was chosen because it is so different and eye catching; third place was well framed and nice light. HM for the farm sunset, for a well composed long-shot for a weather feature.

NEWS

Comments: First place has interesting framing and good emotion that speaks to the story. Second place was chosen because it made us laugh. We would have liked third place better if the subject wasn’t looking into the camera, but still a nice composition from an interesting event.

An elderly man looks out from an upper floor window at a single-room occupancy (SRO) hotel in Chinatown in Vancouver, B.C., on Thursday August 18, 2016. The transformation of Vancouver's Chinatown, fuelled by a changing population, crisis of affordability and promise for new development, has left some locals calling it either a dying neighbourhood or one under threat of gentrification.

SPORTS

Comments: First place rose to the top because of the emotion and story telling value. Second place is a great peak action moment. Third place we loved the powerful emotion but wish it had more context. HM for the football, for a clean frame of a peak action moment, but it’s missing context and story-telling value.

PORTRAIT

Comments: First image was engaging, dramatic and a good use of artificial light. Second was a very close second, with great use of lighting and more discernable news content, however we would have liked a lower perspective to keep the trees separated from the subject’s face. Third is a great, high energy portrait with dynamic composition.

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: We chose the first place entry for its solid, well-rounded coverage of the event, but felt it could have been edited tighter for a contest entry. The second place entry was very technically solid and interesting, but we wish it had incorporated more behind the scenes and spectators, as well as wider angles. The Olympics entry had some very nice frames, but also some that hurt it and should have been cut.
