FEATURE

Comments: Overall the judges found this category could have been stronger. Only the first place winner really stood out and the rest of the field failed to impress. Judges hoped for more imaginative imagery that turned the mundane into extraordinary. It’s what photojournalist are suppose to do after all. Judges liked the first place for it’s surprising content and the expression on the subjects face’s.  Second was another scene that one doesn’t see every day and although the judges felt the crop was too loose, the image still held interest. Third place was the best of the rest. A solid feature photo with good expressions on the  kids. Generally speaking, the best feature photography includes people. They are our most significant subject. Many of the entries failed to include them or they were of little importance in the image.

NEWS

Comments: Lots of good images in this category. Top three awarded after much discussion about how photographers need to be aware of what is happening in front of them and ready for anything. Winner clearly displays this as the photographer reacted with purpose and clarity. Second place is an excellent example of staying with the story and finding that storytelling intimate moment. Third place takes readers inside the story deeper than just a photo of the farmer’s dead sheep and shows another intimate moment. Several other entries were very close to these winners.  A tough category to judge.

SPORTS

Comments: Extremely difficult category to judge with a lot of very good images. Don’t be disappointed if you didn’t place in this category, there was a lot of competition. Judges loved the winner for it’s completeness and beautiful lit qualities. The image “pops” and has solid action with good composition. Second place has a lovely moodiness as well and judges liked the boat in the background lending some scale to the scene. Good to see a sport like surfing entered here and the photographer went the distance to make a solid sports photo. Third place was a unique image that you don’t see everyday. Judges felt the photographer either saw this player do this previously in the warm up and planned to capture it when they did again later or they got lucky with a remote. Regardless, it’s an image that deserved to be recognized. Judges awarded an honourable mention to this basketball action image for it’s clean composition and athletic lines.

PORTRAIT

Comments: A short list of seven or eight entries rose quickly to the top in this category for the judges. Narrowing it down to the top three took a lot more work. First place awarded for it’s harmonic quality. The warm colour palette in the subject matter against the cool grey winter scene was no accident and it works perfectly. Second place evokes a mood not matched by the rest of the field but lost a few marks for it’s lack of storytelling qualities. Judges loved the deep expression and textures in the third place image but wished for a cleaner background. Several other images were close to placing in this category.

1.  Leah Hennel/Postmedia

2. David Bloom/Postmedia

Hereditary chiefs opposed to a natural gas pipeline in Wet'suwet'en territory in northern British Columbia were joined by chiefs from across the province on Wednesday to increase the pressure on the project.

SPOT NEWS

Comments:Slim pickings in this small field of images but judges managed to narrow it down to three pretty quickly. First place is a good example of a spot news event that includes drama and social commentary. A difficult subject to address and the second photo from this scene included in the category helped put this image in context but anytime a photographer has the wherewithal to capture an image like this it should be awarded. Judges would have like to have seen other photos from this event and if the photographer was able to capture the man being taken into custody which could have been more storytelling. An event like this could even produce a strong sequence or picture story in the right hands. Second place is a solid MVA photo but needs to be cropped tighter. Way too much foreground and sky plus the image could be cropped on both sides somewhat. Third place was really the best of the rest and judges liked the human emotion captured, enough to give it a pass whether it could be classified as “spot” news.

MULTI-PHOTO

Comments: Judges were pleased to see such a large number of Multi-picture entries and found it difficult to narrow it down to these four. First place was a challenging subject to cover and the photographer excelled at capturing the mood of such an event. Several outstanding images conveyed the emotional toll these people have paid on both sides of this tragedy. Final image in the story was perfect and made it a complete package. Second place is a good example of a photographer taking the reader into the centre the story. Images were meaningful and held the judge’s attention however the final image fell short of what it could have been. Third place grabbed the judge’s attention immediately and was and early favourite. A good variety of images and the photographer went the extra distance with the underwater frames. An honourable mention was given to the outdoor hockey game. Judges like how the photographer had a good variety of wide, medium and tight images and applying a graphic black and white treatment evoking a hard and gritty match played outdoors in throwback jerseys, reminded them of Tri-X film pushed to 1600 ASA and processed in Acufine Diafine… google it kids.
