QMI Agency's (formally known as the Sun Media, Osprey and or Bowes Publishing) Andre Forget is in Haiti covering this incredibly sad and huge news event for Canada's largest network of newspapers. Some of his images can be seen in QMI papers across Canada and some of his images can be seen on the numerous QMI newspaper websites and on www.Canoe.ca. One of the links where you can see just some of Andre's work is here; www.edmontonsun.com/news/haiti/2010/01/13/12468881.html

As well, there are other Canadian Photo-J's also working in Haiti. A dangerous and unstable place to be right now. Let's all hope (pray) that everyone will stay safe while doing this very difficult and important job of reporting what is going on in the devastated country from the Canadian perspective.

Please add links for other photos being posted by any other Canadian Photo-J's that are currently working in Haiti.

Thanks;

  Hey there,

I'm presently aboard HMCS Athabaskan embedded with the Navy, en route to Haiti. Along with HMCS Halifax we shipped out yesterday afternoon, on pretty quick notice, but that's the way it goes. I still had about three of four hours to get my shots so I guess it wasn't that bad. I'm pumped that the paper asked me to go....with some urging but they did allow for it.

Some of the crew here got their orders at noon for a 3pm push off, kiss the kids and wife (or husband), pack the uni and go..not surprising I guess if you're in the Navy.

Very surreal here, we're in a bit of a bubble. We do have satellite tv, though it competes with movie times. We have limited access to the internet, one computer to surf and send on.(The Herald has no Sat phones, eh?)
Really slow speed at that, photos are slow to email, I can barely get a newspaper's story to load up, when I have a scribe needing to make a blog post or send a sound file. Forget looking at a tv clip or a photo gallery. however, I am very grateful that our PR contact,  Lt. (Navy) Al Blondin has gotten that for us, so is the paper.
I haven't been able to see any real photos since Thursday morning but i knew Andre had his boots on the ground lickedy-split. What a nightmare it must be....and lawless too.

As of yet, the crew hasn't got it's orders on what they'll be doing, the situation e is very fluid but they brought along concrete saws, shovels, picks, food water, a Sea King, refeer units and the like....sounds like some shore duty. A very friendly lot, this crew, they feed us, put up with our cameras, numerous questions (probably stupid ones) and are sharing pretty freely about how they feel about what they're about to get into. Four of five days at sea, in a bubble, headed to a catastrophe.

I just want to get there already and hopefully get the much needed access to let our readers see what  the 500, soon to be 800 or so Haligonians will be doing to contribute to the much needed humanitarian aid that's needed there.
By the time we get there, the story may have "changed" in the way that stories like these "play" themselves out....I kind of doubt it, but in any case, it's only going to begin for the crews of HMCS Athabaskan and HMCS Halifax.

I am amazed at the images coming out of Haiti, and after many years of having to find places to soup film and scan negs, I'd like to think digital is easier to deal with in such a situation.

How are those in Haiti connecting their computers to send images?

Can NPAC do a "Special Report" on the Canadian photographers that went? Where they are sleeping(with everything destroyed), how did they get into country, how do they send images, how do they charge up gear etc..... I am sure many can benefit from this including me.

Good idea, but let's wait until everyone is fully safe and sound to hear the tales from the ground. It can be a dangerous and unpredictable place at the best of times, so under the present conditions I'd feel better with the knowledge that all of our colleagues were past the worst.

It's likely that once communications (local phones, etc) and infrastructure (power, roads, water, hospitals, etc) are back up to a semblance of normalcy, then some of the unpredictability of the situation there will abate. This, of course, might take some time....and that's why the world is there!

Phill.

PS - but hearing from those on the way is pretty nifty too...being aboard ship is likely the most comfortable way to get there!

Of course wait till they get back....... was not expecting anyone to try to do something for NPAC now...........

Ship might be uncomfortable but at least your safe, warm, with food, water and communications........ I am hearing of people driving in from DR. I am wondering how it is getting across the border right now, where do they get supplies.. in DR and drive down with it. Then when you get near there is a chance of getting robbed for your car and supplies.....

Stay safe and healthy everybody!!!

FROM THE GLOBE AND MAIL
Le Devoir reports that some 20 Canadian journalists camped out on the grounds of our Embassy in Port-au-Prince — which is being protected by members of the Canadian Forces — have been asked by staff to leave as soon as possible.
