There is this beauty about traveling on your own in a truck. After having been on many assignments flying from one place to another, always keeping my baggage to a minimum, partly because I hate checking bags and partly because it’s just lighter on me, I found it so enjoyable to pack my Land Rover with books, a mattress, food, water, snacks and random things that I just moved from my room to the truck.

Also, if I find exploded rocket shells, spears, or handcrafted wooden chairs along the way, for once I can take them with me!

How I got to Africa is a bit of a mystery even to me. I have no idea what compelled me to randomly head over to this amazing continent. The moment I decided to leave Germany was after coming back from a party having just moved to Berlin. All I knew was I wanted to check out this war that was happening somewhere in Congo. At that point I probably couldn’t have pointed out the country on a map (even if it is the size of Western Europe). From never really thinking about Africa, to deciding in a couple of hours that I was going to fly there, was slightly random to say the least.

My name is Dominic Nahr and as of now, I am represented by Magnum Photos. I used to be a member of a small French agency called Oeil Public in Paris until they closed, moved briefly to Reportage by Getty Images before finally finding my home at Magnum.

After finishing ‘Pause’, I wanted to continue experimenting and creating more playful images, exploring the possibilities of the medium. It is relatively easy to play with the notion of perspective in photography, as essentially you are converting a 3D space into a 2D medium. However, when I was photographing planes supposedly ‘stopped’ in front of traffic lights, I wanted to explore the idea of images as an interruption of anticipation. During this time, I played around with a few other concepts intending to continue the journey that I started.

Winter is hard hitting around the airports and you can feel the cold in your body especially if you’re standing without moving for a long time. I believe this is the time when you see the dedicated spotters hanging around. Of course, being one of them, I have also spent a considerable amount of time when it was less than perfect conditions for photographing either due to rain or the cold you felt in your fingers – especially the ones you need to operate your camera!

Dear NPAC members and guests,

Social networking has become part of our lives, and an important component of the way we work in the 21st century. Over the past few years, NPAC has become part of a network that many regularly visit. We read the forums, debate, look at the work of others and keep up to date on issues affecting our industry.

Anne-Marie Jackson, who has done an exceptional job as the NPAC website’s publisher for the past two years, recently decided to step down, and I am pleased to have accepted the position. She will be a hard act to follow.

I have seen the hard work that has gone into a site redesign, and I look forward to have the opportunity to be part of the project’s completion. The site now receives almost one million hits per month, and as it continues to grow, it will face new challenges. It is my commitment to work with the NPAC team to meet these challenges and to promote the site as a whole, as well as its advertisers, members and readers.

I thank you for your support.

At the beginning, my objective was to document the spotter community and after some time, I realized that I had many similar images of people watching planes. I was not feeling good about the development of the project when I received some very encouraging advice from a visiting photographer, Trish Morissey. She said sometimes it is necessary to go through cliché images before advancing to the next level. Her advice pushed me to go out of my way and look at the environment differently.
