“Homelands” explores the complexities of life on the margins of South Africa, namely in Woodlane Village, a squatter camp located in the wealthy suburb of Moreleta Park in Pretoria. Woodlane Village comprises 846 households representing around 3000 people from Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique, and South Africa. Most of the residents are economic refugees. The village is called “Plastic View” by the surrounding homeowners who describe the place as a hotbed of crime and pestilence — and oppose community-building efforts. The village is a crucible for the tensions South Africa is experiencing around land, migration, housing, economic segregation, social upheaval and violence.

Mexico’s horrible year

2017 was a bad year for Mexico. Violence soared to record levels, leaving Mexico to compete with Syria for the title of most dangerous country in the world. Two massive earthquakes shook the country—literally and figuratively. Hundreds died. Scandals abound and corruption permeates the ruling PRI party, continuing to dishearten the Mexican population. And there is, of course, was the perpetual bad neighbour, U.S. President Donald Trump.

We Shall See

This project is a personal account of a universal experience. Too often, people are forced to endure trauma and grief in relative solitude. To break this stigma, I have photographed the tragic loss of my father and the subsequent struggles of my family and I to overcome the void left behind. This work follows all of the rules of photojournalism, while an unusually intimate narrative. Some stories can only be accurately expressed in the first-person; I believe this is one of those instances.
