2018 Photojournalism Conference

 

NPAC’s annual Photojournalism Conference is set for April 27–29, 2018, in Toronto. The 11th annual National Pictures of the Year Award Gala will be held April 28, 2018. More details will be added here as they become available.

MUSE PROJECTS

Muse Projects is an arts co-operative that aims to amplify the voices of women in visual storytelling and beyond. Through exhibitions, workshops, public engagement and community events, Muse Projects’ goal is to provide a platform for enabling women to disseminate their stories in both traditional and non-traditional media.

 

 

BARBARA DAVIDSON

Barbara Davidson is a three-time Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award winning photojournalist best known for her work on victims of gang violence in Los Angeles. A Los Angeles Times staff photographer until 2017, Barbara spent much of the past decade photographing women and children trapped in a culture of poverty and guns.

Barbara was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her 2011 project, Caught in the Crossfire, an intimate story of innocent victims trapped in Los Angeles’ deadly gang wars. She also produced and directed a 30-minute documentary, Caught in the Crossfire: Victims of Gang Violence, which received the 2011 Emmy Award for New Approaches to News and Documentary Programming.

In her decade at the Los Angeles Times, she also covered the San Bernardino terrorist attack which earned a Staff Pulitzer Prize, in 2016, for Spot News. In 2014, she was awarded Pictures of The Year International’s award for Newspaper Photographer of the Year, for the second time, in part for her project on solitary confinement at Corcoran’s men’s prison in California.

Barbara graduated from Concordia University in her hometown of Montreal, Canada, with a BFA in Photography and Film Studies.

JOHN STANMEYER

John Stanmeyer is an award-winning US photojournalist, Emmy-nominated filmmaker and field recordist dedicated to social and political issues that define our times.

For more than a decade, John has worked nearly exclusively with National Geographic magazine, producing over 17 stories for the magazine resulting in more than 10 covers.

Between 1998 and 2008, John was a contract photographer for Time magazine. His years with Time resulted in 18 covers.

In 2001, Stanmeyer cofound with six of the world’s leading photojournalists the VII photo agency.

Stanmeyer is represented by Nat Geo Creative and is an Emeritus member of VII. He is the recipient of numerous honours, including the prestigious Robert Capa award, POYi Magazine Photographer of the Year and the World Press Photo of the Year in 2014.

 

 

The Globe and Mail’s Visual Journalism Team

In February 2018, The Globe and Mail merged its photo, video, design, graphics, data and interactive teams into a single department known as the Visual Journalism team. It’s responsible for the presentation of all Globe journalism on all platforms.

This re-alignment has been part of an overall transformation of the entire newsroom and has led The Globe to become a leader in new approaches to journalism internationally.

Matt Frehner and Jason Chiu (Head and Deputy Head, respectively) of the Visual Journalism department will walk you through how the team works, what stories they’ve told and are working on, and what they’ve got their eyes on.

 

 

Ed Ou and Kitra Cahana

Ed Ou and Kitra Cahana are Canadian journalists and visual storytellers whose work has appeared in the New York Times, National Geographic and the CBC. They have won numerous awards and grants, including World Press Photo Awards, a Pulitzer Center Catalyst Grant and multiple grants from the Canada Council for the Arts. They are both TED Senior Fellows.

Over the past few years, Ou and Cahana have made several trips to Arviat, Nunavut, located on the shores of the Hudson Bay. There, they have filmed the Sila Rainbow Dance Competition, an annual event that highlights the talents of Arviat youth.

In a town that has lost so many of its young people to suicide, dance has become a positive force of hope and healing.

Ed and Kitra will present their feature documentary ‘Dancing Towards The Light’ followed by a Q&A.
