Tall Ship Adventure – Yvonne Berg
For ten days last August, a group of 24 teens from all walks of life crammed themselves into a 72-foot square-rigged tall ship and set sail across Georgian Bay. I joined them for part of their journey, photographing their adventure: strangers stuck with each other aboard this ship, eventually learning to live and sail with each other, and growing to become friends.
Tall Ship Adventures is a very unique sail training program. Everyone on board, including the crew, is between 14 to 18 years old, with the exception of the captain who, at the ripe old age of 25, has many years of experience under his belt.
Although two trainees left the program mid-way through, most came away having experienced valuable life lessons that can’t always be learned in a classroom – a renewed sense of accomplishment, increased confidence, a completely new skill set and the ability to push the boundaries of their comfort zones. For one trainee, just battling against sea-sickness – and winning – was enough to help him overcome his desire to jump ship.
